Restaurant Owner Plans 'Obamacare Surcharge' for Customers

Say What!? 72

dennys signFlorida restaurant owner John Metz, who owns 40+ Denny’s locations on the East Coast, intends to add a 5 percent surcharge to his customers’ bills to offset the costs of Obamacare, beginning in January 2014. And oh yeah, he is also going to cut employee hours to below 30 a week for most of his staff in order to avoid having to provide them with insurance. But shhh, he’s not telling them until next month so mum’s the word.

Apparently, these Denny’s employees aren't going to be allowed to have health insurance, and they’re also not allowed to read.

So is this how it's going to go come January -- job hours being cut and surcharges imposed on customers because businessmen are pissed about Obamacare? Wah, wah, wah! So many people with money and insurance hate Obamacare, especially those people in the medical field. I get it. You "haves" like to keep what you have, and damn Obamacare is going to come in and try and take it from you.

Oh wait, no it’s not. It’s just going to give insurance to poor people who can’t afford it because, newsflash, people with money are not the only people who get sick. People who are sick need medical care. That is the bottom line. Can’t we all just show a little human kindness and be happy that people won’t die because they can’t afford insurance? Or do some of us truly believe that if you are poor, you deserve to die?

Of course, some business owners are going to try to outsmart the system because they don’t want to be penalized or pay for insurance for employees. It will probably soon become big business to find a way to get around paying for Obamacare. I can see it now -- businesses will spend huge amounts of money NOT to spend money on Obamacare.

If businesses are going to punish their employees by taking away hours and punish their customers by adding surcharges just to avoid helping people in need of insurance, then maybe we should all punish these businesses by boycotting their product or business? I think that's a pretty darn good idea.

Do you think it’s okay for businesses to punish employees and customers because they oppose Obamacare?

Access to free healthcare. Something I now have. And it's excellent.

Its not free. You pay for it through your taxes.

It's corporate greed at it's finest.  They can easily take the 5% out of their profits but refuse to.  Don't want to cut back on their fanct lifestyle I guess.   It's just sad.

Right, but we didn't pay thousands out of pocket for a facial reconstruction surgery. Nor did my neighbor pay tens of thousands for a 4 month hospital stay due to a life saving brain tumor removal. The tax we pay is worth it. Beyond worth it. It served us when we needed it. I hope Americans currently without insurance and in need of medical services as serious as these, or even just routine checkups, are afforded coverage soon.

Estella, forcing people on insurance by fining them is not going to solve the problem. How about making health care cheaper. It shouldnt cost tens of thousands of dollars for surgeries. People shouldnt be able to sue for hundreds of thousands of dollars for menial things. There are a lot more things we need to correct first, before putting this into action.

Do you realize that if you aren't offered insurance through your employer, the state has insurance programs for that? Indiana has HIP... it's free healthcare, but you pay a small monthly fee based on your income, and they even set up a HSA account and withdrawal the monthly amount from that so technically you don't pay anything!

I just see it as more people will be getting government funded insurance, which is the best insurance I have yet to find! I kind of wish I could get it! lol

Billsfan, you can count uninsured people who come into the ER as one of the reasons healthcare is skyrocketed. They use the ER like a PCP, run up hundreds, thousands of dollars in tests, doctors fees, etc - then we never get paid. Billing will end up sending the to collections, but probably 95% of the time we never see a dime. The hospital ends up writing it off. So that in turn causes the fees to go up to help compensate. That's just one reason. Also, for people that do have insurance, there are things called contracted rates. If the hospital has a usual and customary fee of $100 for a service, but the contracted rate (Medicare is the worst) is $65.00, guess what? We have to write off the $35.00. So even though fees may seem outrageous, we actually loose money hand over fist. I do agree that healthcare costs have gotten WAY out of hand. These are just a few of the reasons. Malpractice insurance, having to completely change systems in smaller offices to be compliant with EHR standards by 2014, paying for new equipment, etc - that all affects your bill.

You know, Mr Business could have been a big boy and simply raised prices a few cents or a dollar per dish or whatever it took or you know LEFT HIS POLITICS OUT OF IT. But no. He had to throw a wobbler, like the rest of the GOP crowd has been doing for over a week, and prove that he has no good business sense whatsoever. He could have quietly raised prices, attributing it to the rising cost of food if asked and not offended 50 percent of the clientele. Dumb. Ass.

Hey Procrast, you have NO right to bitch about our country or tell us that we have to remain quiet and deal with it. I have every right to bitch and complain, especially since my rates have gone up 90 dollars a month and I am getting less insurance. And this is because of Obamacare. This owner has every right to bitch, because it is his business.
