Petitions Asking That 20 States 'Quit the USA' Over Obama Are Anti-American

Eye Roll 176

american flagWhen George W. Bush -- likely the most unpopular president in the history of the United States -- was re-elected, blue staters were shocked, appalled, and in mourning for about a week. But after that, we pulled ourselves up by the bootstraps and resolved to get what we could done despite his presidency and elect a Democrat in 2008. But now that President Obama has been re-elected, some red state Americans are reacting by taking a completely extremist tack. (Go figure.)

First, a disgruntled, ignorant teen tweeted she was moving to Australia "because their president is a Christian and actually supports what he says." Then, tons of conservatives threatened to move to Canada (oh please, have at it -- but our neighbors to the north have socialized medicine!). And now? Angry voters in as many as 20 states have filed petitions on the White House website seeking to secede from the union and form new state governments. No, they're not kidding.

The one out of Alabama reads: "We petition the Obama Administration to peacefully grant the State of Alabama to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own new government." Many of the petitions also point to the Declaration of Independence, and the fact that it holds that it is "the Right of the People to ... institute new Government ... whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends."

So far, petitions have been filed for Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Texas is reportedly the closest to having the 25,000 or more signatures within 30 days required to be reviewed by -- get this -- the Obama administration! Bhahaha. Ironic, eh? Not to mention that these ridiculous, disgraceful petitions are the epitome of anti-American.

To these fellow citizens who think that disdain for this president, this election, and more specifically, how the government should handle health care, job creation, taxes, the separation of church and state, etc. are reason to secede from the country, GET A GRIP. We're talking about one office, one administration, only four more years. We're talking about an election result decided by a popular vote of 62,151,820 votes for Obama (versus 58,799,365 for Romney) and 338 electoral votes for Obama (versus a measly 206 for Romney). Yes, the majority of Americans voted to re-elect President Obama. Yes, that was democracy at work. And just because you didn't win this time around, you're going to throw a temper tantrum and threaten to secede? Furthermore, you think you have the right to speak for everyone else in your state?! I'd bet MOST people in Hurricane Sandy-battered New Jersey and New York would prefer to remain a part of the U.S.A. and keep their federal/FEMA funding and support! I know you only have to be 13 years old to create a petition on WhiteHouse.gov, but these people are acting no better than the whiniest kid in the kindergarten class.

Newsflash: Liberals got through two horrifying terms of Dubya Bush (that are still taking a toll on this country), so angry conservatives, guess what? YES YOU CAN get through the reign of the Obama administration you so abhor. You can patriot up and participate in this country's system to create the change you want to see.

But the sad reality is that for most of these angry petitioners, there isn't a particular change they'd like to see. They just love to hate President Obama. And nine times out of ten, their reason for doing so seems to be that they simply can't stand seeing a half-black man in the White House. Or knowing female, black, and Latino voters overwhelmingly put him there. Well, like it or not, it's all of our White House. Like it or not, this is all of our country. Like it or not, this is the UNITED States of America. And proposing succession as a real solution to our very real differences is nothing more than a pathetic, irresponsible joke.

What do you make of these secession petitions?

Okay, wow. I call bullshit on that first part. I live in Washington state and all I heard for 8 YEARS was bitching about Bush. 'Pulled youself up by the bootstraps' my left ass cheak.

LOL- this is the biggest joke post ever. Did you actually comprehend anything posted after GWB was elected for a second term? People cried for months, years even, and STILL cry over the fact that he won. People still claim that he stole the vote and was never 'rightfully' the president. *sigh*

There were groups that protested his every move. There were groups that protested outside his home even AFTER he was no longer the president. I know there is one lady in particular that still shows up where he does with her trusty picket group and plans to do so until he dies or goes to jail. There are groups who STILL claim and are trying to convince congress to try him for war crimes.

You are trying to paint a wonderful 'my side is so much smarter' picture- you just look ignorant. Both sides have poor losers. If you really had it all together and understood this crazy world we live in- you'd understand that both sides have extremest and both sides to crazy stuff in order to make their voices heard.

You, Ms. Blogger, are part of the problem- spreading unintelligent blabber to the blind-following masses.

I am from Washington state too and I call bullshit also.  All we heard was Bush bashing for eight years, you never 'got over it.'  The election is over Maressa aren't you sick of shoveling bullshit for the left.  You call this election a victory but most Americans don't.  More horrifying than the results were interviews with Obama supporters proving to be some of the most uneducated people in the world.  I hope you all are enjoying the daily announcements of layoffs and business's closing.  All this election proved is the country is more divided than ever and that our system is broken.  Personally I have no problem with states wanting to be their own country.  If the majority of the state votes for it then its none of our business.  Funny how you aren't bent out of shape about Puerto Rico not wanting to be a state until recently and even then by a very small margin.  Sadder than the fact that you media persons on the left are only interested in peddling hate is how many Americans are dumb enough to fall for your manipulations.

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that you claim that 9 out of 10 people bitching are doing so because he is half black. I personally don't give a damn what color he is wholly or partially. I don't agree with his politics. I am also sick and freakin tired of hearing every democrat claim they pulled up their big girl panties and pulled together. Democrats whined and complained for 8 years and now they can't take what they gave out.

Are you kidding me? The vitriol coming from the left after Bush won in 2004 was MUCH worse than this. Not that it justifies anti-American behavior this time around, but you must understand, Maressa, that people are understandably upset over Obama's reelection because he is taking this country in a profoundly un-American direction. Perhaps YOU should move to Canada and leave this country to those of us who believe in individual responsibility. Of course, that is an unrealistic hope and we all need to do our best to reach a compromise while standing up for our values, but you have the worst sort of liberal blinders on...again. And I ABSOLUTELY agree with wamom. I would be a lot less upset over the results of this election if it had actually been decided by educated people.

4 more years of that f'n race card...That alone is worth secedding over.

The fact that you had politicians saying they were going to make sure President Obama only lasted one term proves that he wasn't given a fair chance. I hope these states realize that by suceeding from the USA will get rid of all their funds that they love so much.

Estel... EstellaHavisham

It's okay. The majority of Americans want him in office.

How is this the "epitome of anti-American?"  Individuals were the ones that started the petitions, so isn't that what our freedom of speech protection is for?? They obviously know that it is not going to happen, but they are making their own voices heard in a peaceful way. You, dear writer, should also be very thankful for the right to have freedom of speech otherwise you'd most likey be out of a job since you seem intent on penning drivel. I wish I hadn't opened this column.
