In what's probably the most depressing story you'll hear all day, a woman who was nine months pregnant, and her unborn baby, were recently killed by an alleged drunk driver. Tiffany Ann Woodham of Bartow, Oklahoma was actually having contractions when 37-year-old Thomas Jeremy Dick allegedly rear-ended the van she was in, which also contained three other passengers.
According to the cops, Woodham suffered serious trauma during the crash, and died due to her injuries while en route to the hospital. In an effort to save the baby -- which she had named Novalee -- an emergency C-section was performed. Unfortunately, though, Novalee didn't make it either.
I honestly can't think of anything more horrifying.
According to witnesses, Thomas Jeremy Dick was reportedly driving like a lunatic and ran off the road on more than one occasion. Police are claiming that he was exceeding the speed limit by a minimum of 20 mph, and his blood alcohol content was .131 -- AKA almost twice the legal limit. Right now, Dick is at a local hospital, but once he's released, he'll be placed in jail, as he's been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, two counts of DUI manslaughter, two counts of DUI involving serious bodily injury, DUI crash involving property damage, and DUI.
I really will never understand why people feel the need to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking -- or why other people who know they're drunk don't take their keys. It goes without saying: It never ends well. And not that anybody's life is less or more important than another's, but wow, hitting and killing a child or a pregnant woman -- it's as tragic and awful as it gets.
There's really nothing that can be said about this other than, "This sucks." Thoughts and prayers to Tiffany's loved ones.
How awful is this? Would you take the keys from someone who shouldn't be driving?
