Hurricane Sandy-Stricken Jersey Shore Will Never Be The Same

ferris wheel seaside heightsWhile the entire Tri-State area is currently facing pretty much unparalleled devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy, it is probably safe to say the Jersey shore suffered some of the absolute worst damage. For that reason, President Obama traveled there today, joining Governor Chris Christie to tour the devastated area. As you may have seen, the photos making their way around the globe at this point are jaw-droppingly horrific.

‘Course that hasn’t stopped some people from joking around that this was Sandy’s way of vetoing another season of MTV’s Jersey Shore! Ha ha. But in all seriousness, the destruction all along New Jersey’s coast is nothing short of totally overwhelmingly … sad.

After all, it’s not just Snooki and her pals who can lay claim to the scenic coasts of Sandy Hook, Seaside Heights, Point Pleasant, and Atlantic City. Generations of family have called these areas their vacation spots — not to mention hometowns. And now, it’s possible they may never be the same …

Consider how the storm ravaged beaches, swept homes off their foundations in some coastal communities, wrecked some boardwalks, and knocked amusement park rides from piers. A famous roller coaster on the fun time pier in Seaside Heights has been plunged into the sea. A 99-year-old merry-go-round has been destroyed. Officials told The New York Times that as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, 70 to 80 percent of Atlantic City was underwater. The only silver lining? As Gov. Chris Christie has noted, these are all landmarks “resilient” New Jerseyans can and will be able to re-build ...

There are already cries on Facebook for Jersey rockers Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi to join forces to do a “Restore the Shore” fundraising concert. Danny Merk, the Jersey Shore cast’s real-life boss, has vowed to do whatever it takes to rebuild Seaside Heights. And everyone in all of the affected seaside communities will undoubtedly band together to dig out from under the destruction and start again.

But judging from what we’ve seen so far, the process will be anything but easy. Like President Obama said, it’s not going to happen “overnight.” It will happen … But, in the meantime, it’s important to remember that no matter how much many Snooki-meets-Sandy jabs we’ve got in the hopper, the real Jersey shore’s devastation is no laughing matter.

Are you stunned by the devastation that Sandy caused the Jersey shore?
