New Krim Killing Details May Reveal Nanny's Horrifying Motive

police tapeIn the wake of Superstorm Sandy, it seems like the Krim children murder case has been pushed out of the news cycle. But for many parents, the case continues to haunt. Yoselyn Ortega, the nanny suspected of stabbing 6-year-old Lucia Krimand her 2-year-old brother Leo was to be arraigned at some point this week, but the courts in New York may or may not be functioning because of the storm. Nevertheless, the horrifying story does have some grim new details.

Mother Marina Krim had apparently been having some issues with the nanny and may have even told her she needed to do a better job or find new employment. According to the New York Post, the Krims had given nanny Yoselyn Ortega some extra work cleaning and picking up around the house because she was having financial problems. But this extra work only made her more “rageful” against the family.

Asking someone to do extra work or work that is outside their job description does occasionally lead to resentment. Someone hired to care for children might become angry when they are asked to do work they consider more “menial” or not what they were hired to do. On the other hand, it sounds like the Krims were doing Ortega a favor and giving her something she asked for. And even if she WAS resentful, why take it out on the innocent children?

I have found myself wondering this whole past week how Ortega could have done what she did. The case has haunted me in a way few cases do. Maybe it is because the children look like mine and are so close in age. Maybe it is because I have employed nannies and caregivers and trusted them to shuttle my kids from school to dance class to karate and back.

The thing that is so scary about this case is that the Krims are like me. They are like my friends. They are a family who did nothing wrong. They were not drug addicts or bad parents or anything of the sort. If anything, Marina Krim is the kind of mom we all aspire to be. Judging from her blog, which has now been pulled, she is loving and patient and kind. She is a stay at home mom who employed help just to make sure all three of children got extra love and attention.

Kevin Krim is a hard-working dad whose children have been well cared for because of his dedication and hard work. All of this makes it that much scarier. Even the best parents in the world are not immune to random, horrible things. If this can happen to them, it can happen to anyone.

In many ways, it does not matter WHY Ortega did what she is suspected of doing. Nothing will bring back those angelic babies. No “reason” could ever justify hurting two innocent children. If she was “raging” she needed counseling. Clearly. And she needed to be far, far from kids. That guilt should be on her. Only she knew what was going on inside her head.

All the Krim family did was try to be kind to someone who was struggling.

Does this story haunt you, too?

The betrayal must feel horrible for Marina. What is sad for me is I read in another article that when her girls were at school or was with Dad, she loved her time with her son, one of the victims. That made me feel horrible for this family.

I was a nanny for a horrible mother and father but I loved their child and would have never done harm to him.

This story has absolutely haunted me since the day it happened. Not a day goes by where I don't think of that family and feel sick. :(

So you piss n moan because you're havin money issues... They offer you more money (of course for more work) and then you go and piss n moan about that?!!!! WTF is wrong with people... They were trying to help her and she repaid them by murdering those sweet children!?!?!!!!! I'm sorry, but that lady had seriously deeper issues than money

If the cleaning was outside of her job requirements, why not speak up? It sounds like it wasn't a request on the mother's behalf, but a helpful way for the nanny to earn more money. It was only an extra 5 hours a week.

Every time I read something about this story it breaks my heart.  Those were two incredibly beautiful children who did absolutely nothing wrong.  This woman is a sick, sick individual.  She destoyed a family because she was mad about having to do more work, which she asked for.  It's so incredibly heartbreaking, the children are so close in age to my kids that when I look at them I feel such an overwhelming sense of grief for these people.  The mom just wanted a little extra help to be able to be a good mom, and now 2 of her children are dead because of the actions of a deranged woman.  It really is one of the most horrible and saddest stories I ever encountered.  RIP Lucia and Leo.

I appreciate your acknowledgement of the kind of mother Marina is. I have known her my entire life and know how much she cared for her children. Too many articles have focused on the fact that she employed a nanny and not on the fact that she is a stay at home mother. --- LuLu and Leo are missed, and we mourn the heartbreak that their family and friends are feeling.

All this does is reinforce the idea that you can't trust anyone these days.  String up the nanny.

You do not get it. You've never had to worry about the price tag on a gallon of milk. This woman - the nanny - was not making enough money to have her own house to live in with HER FAMILY - and she was literally slaving for the well being and care of the kids she was watching WHO HAD EVERYTHING. GIVING HER A FEW EXTRA DOLLARS to clean up the cat's litterbox, for example, is a slap in the face to someone watching the family buy their 3rd guestbedroom a new tv or whatever, that's just an example. It doesn't mean the nanny deserved their money - but in AMERICA income inequality is crazy - people who work in grocery stores cannot afford to buy the products they stock on $8 an hour, hospital assistants cannot afford health insurance - it is no excuse for the nanny to harm anyone - but the parents were not doing everything they could to help her - they have no idea what it is like to not have enough to live decently. AGAIN, that is no excuse for harming the children. But you really DO NOT GET what it is like to try to afford to live in america if you don't make a lot of money, work a lot of hours, and can't even have extra time for your own family while taking care of somebody else's. i had a nanny and I understood perfectly well that all her money was going to pay for her 17 year old in high school to wear a bullet proof vest to school and to save for his college education.

p.s. see my other comment. $5 a week! I thought you were kidding! they gave her $20 a month more TO DO MORE WORK! Did that break their getting half a latte a day for ONE parent?
