Forget Wall Street fat cats! Big Bird is the real villain, swiping all you taxpayers' hard-earned dough. At least, that's what you might conclude from the rhetoric the Republican party -- and Mitt Romney specifically in last week's debate -- has been throwing around. The Dems and President Obama want us to know just how ridiculous that is, and so their campaign put out an ad stating pretty much just that.
The tongue-in-cheek ad casts Big Bird as the figurehead overseeing the financial industry's greed and notes that Romney has the guts to tell it like it is: "It's not Wall Street you have to worry about, it's Sesame Street!!!" Ha, amazing! But, unfortunately, Sesame Workshop isn't as amused. In fact, they actually requested that the Obama campaign take the ad down.
Their official statement:
Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns. We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down.
Bummer, but I definitely don't blame them for wanting to remain hands-off and make it known that they're not interested in being a pawn in this political bloodsport. Ultimately, because they are nonpartisan, nonprofit, they wouldn't do well to endorse -- or even just stay mum -- on an attack ad centered around their most iconic character.

Still, it's irritating, because the ad itself makes a legitimate point. The Republican party has been pointing their fingers at PBS as if it were hemorrhaging as many budget dollars as the defense budget, and Romney brought up Big Bird in the debate. For that reason, the ridiculous idea of cutting funding to PBS to save one one-hundredth of one percent of the federal budget is part of our political discourse today. And the ad was a fair attempt to chime in.
But if Big Bird wants to stay on neutral ground, the Obama campaign is sure to respect that. Thankfully, with or without Sesame's support, the message the ad was aiming to send seems to be getting through anyway.
