catarinaAs the old adage goes, sex sells! A 20-year-old Brazilian woman is auctioning off her virginity to the highest bidder. The top offer currently stands at $160,000, but Cararina Migliorini, a physical education student, is hoping for a lot more.

When someone does this -- and many have offered up their v-card for a price before -- all kinds of insults are hurled their way: hooker, immoral, sick, perverted, slutty. But Migliorini is no prostitute or girl gone wild. Quite the opposite, actually. She's giving up her goods for an admirable cause.

The young woman is selling herself to raise money to build houses for poverty-stricken families in her hometown of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. I actually admire that the dedication to her slum-filled community is so strong that she is willing to go this far.

Yes, it's a bit gross and she's taking a huge gamble. God knows who will win. The guy could be a total freak, or sleaze, or totally repulsive. I certainly could have never done this. But I say more power to her. She told Folha newspaper:

If you only do it once in your life, then you are not a prostitute, just like if you take one amazing photograph, it does not automatically make you a photographer ... The auction is just business, I'm a romantic girl at heart and believe in love. But this will make a big difference to my area.

Catarina's journey to "losing it" will be captured in a film called Virgins Wanted. It will reportedly chronicle her emotions before and after the big encounter. There is even a guy virgin participating in the film too. The auction ends on October 15 and the lucky winner will be tested for STDs and have to wear a condom when he claims his, um, winnings.

I know this will still be a hard sell for many people. What kind of woman does this, right? Think about it. Women have given up their v-card for much less noble reasons and to all kinds of skeevy jerks. She's just housing a bunch of families in the process.
