If vigilantism was cool or legal, we'd consider Patrick Drum a real Miles Davis. But since it's not, we'll just have to consider him a violent man on his way to jail. In a Washington courtroom yesterday, Drum, 34, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering 28-year-old Gary L. Blanton Jr. and 56-year-old Jerry W. Ray. Drum took their lives because he has a vendetta against sex offenders, and both Blanton and Ray had been convicted rapists.
Ray pleaded guilty to raping a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old back in 2002, and Blanton pleaded guilty, at 17, to raping a 17-year-old disabled girl. Drum evidently wanted both men to pay for their crimes, and took matters into his own hands. He shot them both multiple times.
Just as no one wants child rapists roaming around, no one wants lawless killers out and about, either. Ray's and Blantan's crimes were heinous and I'm disgusted that there are people out there capable of such things, but at the same time, I'm also appalled that there are those out there who think Drum is some kind of hero for his actions.
Apparently, he has some supporters who are stalking the victims' families, spitting on them and whatnot.
Drum murdered two people in cold blood. He's not a hero nor a pioneer. In fact, he's a criminal himself, having spent four years in prison on drug charges. He got Ray's and Blantan's names off the public sex offender registry and decided to kill them. He was suspected to be on his way to kill a third sex offender when cops intervened. What, exactly, is so brave and noble about that?
I guess he fancied himself some sort of Dexter character who could exact revenge on those who had done pretty horrible things, but Dexter is just a TV show. It doesn't work that way in real life. You can't go around shooting people in the face because you think they deserve it. Like Mom always says, two wrongs don't make a right.
Drum deserves life without parole because as soon as we show someone like him any leniency, the law becomes absolutely meaningless.
Do you think Drum did something good or evil?

I am glad he took a stand! I don't think it is respectful to go after the victims families and spit on them though. I am just so sick and tired of the system! The system doesn't protect and take care of the real victims, it takes care of the offender! They are only given a slap on the wrist and let go just to go on and do this sick shit again and again! The way I see it is he saved other innocent victims a life of pain because now we have two less sex offenders that cannot lay their hands on another victim!
"2 wrongs do not make a right" How often have we all heard this quote? Time and time again. Seems our judicial system believes the same. Where has that got us? Over crowded prisons, taxpayers money being used to buy prisoners all the frivolities to have a comfy life in their cells. Better health care than your parents or grandparents get on medicare. not to fail to mention short term sentencing and early releases for heinous crimes which many become repeat offenders. So I don't fault when someone loses it and takes matters into their own hands. I do believe the man who killed these rapists had to stand trial, but the sentence he recieved was wrong. He does not deserve life without parole. How ironic that sex offenders who destroy their victims lives are released in a few years. There is just no hope in our r judicial system...and I am sure that is how this man felt when he took his vigilante role.
I have to agree with mommytojb....if it were one of my children that were harmed, not only would I have thanked him for his service, I would do everything I could to stand behind him and pay for his legal fees (that is - if I hadn't killed them myself). Put yourself in any one of those parents shoes OR the children even. Imagine the fear and anger knowing that those monsters were free. Justifiable homicide if you ask me.
You seem to have missed what I was saying. I wasnt comparing the two incidents as being the same, only the justification of vigilantes of self administered justice based in a child being hurt or killed. Go ahead and kill the molester, but when you are convicted of murder, don't start crying that it is unjust.
