Mitt Romney Doesn't Know the First Thing About How 'Hard' It is to Be a Mom

by Jacqueline Burt on August 30, 2012 at 11:30 PM

mitt romney and babyI could swear a blue-ribbon hog just went soaring past my window, because a few minutes ago at the Republican National Convention, Mitt Romney said something I actually agreed with! Granted, somebody else wrote it and put it up on the teleprompter for him to read, but at least he said these words out loud (regarding his wife Ann Romney and the years she spent raising their children):

"I knew that her job as a mom was harder than mine and I knew without question that her job as a mom was more important than mine."

So Romney got one thing right. Thanks for the condescending pat on the forehead, man. Good job, mommies! You work hard! I'm still not fooled. You might be a husband who knows how to give your wife credit when thousands of people are watching, but you have no idea what it's like to be a working mother in America today. And tonight, you gave yourself away.

Especially when you told us all about OUR struggles.  About how WE couldn't find jobs or sell our homes or pay our debts.

"What could you do?" asked Romney. "What could you do but work harder ... hug your kids for longer ... spend a little more time praying."

He was asking, you realize, because he really DOESN'T KNOW what we did. Did we work harder, hug our kids longer and spend more time praying? Sure. Sure, we did -- and we do -- those things. But we also burn ourselves working 24/7 and give ourselves stress-induced ulcers and yell at our kids because we're so tense and overworked and worried about how we're going to pay the bills and we also shake our fists at the sky and decide there can't possibly BE anyone to pray to when the world is this fucked up.

Oh well. At least Mitt Romney still has a smile on HIS face.

Do you think Mitt Romney really knows or cares what it's like to be a working mom in America?

I like your article Jacqueline....I'm a conservative independent. I've never voted democrat but this year I probably will. Mitt just rubs me the wrong way on all fronts. I wish politicians would just leave women alone altogether, good and bad,  and focus on issues like the deficit, jobs, war etc.

I'm a liberal and usually vote democrat, though there are many Republican politicains who I can find something about to like. However, there is something about Mitt beyond his politics that just feels SO ingenuine to me. As much as I disagreed with George W., he always struck me as a genuine and sincere person. I thought he was ill-equipped and misguided, but seemed like a nice, genuine, sincere guy and someone you'd enjoy meeting at a barbeque and have a few laughs with. Something about the way Mitt speaks just seems SO PHONY, and it really is beyond policy. He is really uncomfortable to listen to, I just feel that even his smile is so plastic. Anyway, I was just wondering if any conservatives get this vibe from him, personally, his politics notwithstanding?

"Author" you're such an ass. Yeah, the man who is married to the woman who raised his five sons has no idea.

That makes me wonder if your signficant other has any idea how daft you really are.

And Mitt Romney is blame for all of your struggles, right? Certainly Barack Obama isn't responsible.

Well if we want to get really specific, he doesn't know what it's like to be a working mom or a SAHM... Neither does Obama. All they have is the words/experiences from their wives. This article is dumb. Please stop hating on the Romneys for making the choice for Ann to stay home and Mitt to work. We don't know people's personal choices and the reasons behind them. I don't judge others as I wouldnt want people to judge me for making the decision i have made. You really think Obama knows the hardships of Americans??? I don't think so. He plays his single mom card and has America's heart. But I don't care what kind of sob story someone has(bc we all have them), I care what that person is gonna do for our country.

I don't like Romney either, just not right for me. But, ladies, remember there are many working moms out there who for one reason or another don't have a significant other. My hubby's been traveling for the last two weeks and man do I appreciate how much he does for me. But there are those who don't have that help: widows, divorcees, wives of deployed soldiers.
