So I'm hoping to god this whole "dress up in scrubs and pretend to be a nurse so you can steal a newborn from the hospital" thing isn't becoming some sort of crime trend, because so far this month? This has happened twice! To completely different babies in completely different hospitals. And that's just two times too many.
Especially considering the fact that this latest babysnatcher-in-disguise was just 19 years old! Who apparently spent the past few months trying to convince her family she was pregnant. Oh, lord. What is wrong with people?!
Why, why, why? According to police, Breona Moore, 19, dressed up in nurse's scrubs, went to the hospital and pretended to be the sister of a 3-day-old newborn's mom. Then, once she gained access to the room, she claimed to be a nurse and said "she needed to take the baby for a checkup ... The family eventually realized something was amiss and alerted hospital officials."
Well, I should hope so! Thankfully, as with the last faux-nurse newborn abduction attempt, Moore was apprehended before she made it off of hospital grounds. But wtf? Don't most hospitals have some kind of rule about employee ID badges or something?!
All I know is, if I was having a baby right now? I'd be fairly terrified to hand that kid off to anybody, scrubs or not. Can you prove you're a nurse?! Quick, take my blood!!
Would you be scared about a crime like this if you were having a baby right now?

I delivered at Magee and I thought they had decent security. When I had my daughter, my boyfriend stepped out in the hallway while holding her (he was watching for his parents I think). Within a minute or two, two different nurses hustled over and insisted on on checking both of their bracelets to make sure he belonged holding her. They were also very, I guess, aggressive (for lack of a better word - they weren't rude or anything) about reminding us about checking all staffs badges for the pink stork before allowing them to take the baby. Only staff who's badge has the pink stork on it are allowed to hold the babies or do anything with the babies at all. From what I've read, crazy girl didn't have one. I'm not at all blaming the mom ( would never do that) but she should have checked for it.
I had my babies in the same hospital that this baby was abducted. The babies do wear some type alarm system around their ankle. I also remember that every nurse I had wore ID's because that is how I was able to remember their names. If I remember correctly, the baby was three days old and that is usually when they release the parents and their newborn if there is no complications. Before releasing the baby, they have to take the ankle braclet off. Unfortunately, this girl was able to find a tiny window of opportunity to take this baby. This is a really good hospital and the staff are terrific. My experience in the hospital was wonderful. It is unfortunate that this happened and I am sure that the policy will change on who can come into the hospital.
I had my first in a small birthing center and my second at home, so I didn't have to worry about this at the birth, but I was a wreck when my youngest ended up in the NICU because of a sugar crash (my OB had missed my GD, though my midwife had requested I be retested--what do ya know? I passed both tests and still had it). She had the little ankle alarm and we had to be buzzed in, but the nurses just asked which baby we were parents to. They never asked for an ID. Made me wonder. I spent a LOT of time at that NICU til she was released 2 days later. I would have slept there if they had allowed me to.
Never let your baby out of your sight in the hospital.
All the more reason to give birth at home.
When my youngest was born my mother in law came to the hospital after visiting hours and went to the nursery and got in to see my daughter then came to see me and when I asked her how she got in after visiting hours she said she just kept banging on the locked doors until the nursery nurses let her in. Then she told me she could do whatever she wanted because she was the grandma.
