Regular readers of The Stir are no doubt familiar with our political blogger, Nadia Jones. She is a mother of two, an Obama supporter, and an attorney specializing in voter protection law.
She's also not afraid to share her opinions! We caught up with Nadia in Florida during our Moms Matter Road Trip and sat down for a chat. Check out what Nadia had to say after the jump!
Nadia has an interesting perspective on the election, in part because she didn't become a US citizen until she was 30 years old. For that reason, she takes voting very seriously, and she has a vested interest in mobilizing others to vote.
As a Florida resident, Nadia has a front row seat when it comes to voter issues. (For background on Florida's voting controversy, check out our YouTube video on the state's efforts to tighten its voter registration law.) She also has great insight into Florida's Latino community.
My favorite part of our conversation was when Nadia and I talked about what it's like to write for The Stir, and how we're personally impacted by comments. While any well-read website is going to have commenters who love to lash out at the site's writers, I've been thrilled to see many of you trying hard to share your opinions and views and respond to what other commenters have to say without being rude or mean. I believe that as mothers who are constantly modelling appropriate behavior for our kids, we have a chance to really set a standard of civility in political discourse that we can only hope others will follow. I'm glad to see that others of you feel that way as well.
Check out Nadia's no-holds-barred posts on The Stir for more of her views, and tell us what you think of her opinions in the comments of this post!

Nadia Jones, after posting the ridiculous lies in the "Paul Ryan Promises to Take Our Country Backward" article on August 17, and then in this very video insinuates that the FL voter ID laws are "racist" has the unmitigated gall to now make noises about "seting a standard of civility" "without being rude or mean"?!?!?
Breathtaking hypocrisy!
^^ And here we have prime examples of commentors who are completely unable to engage in thoughtful and respectful political discourse. The entire mode of operation is "I'm right and you're stupid". Do you guys even try to write your opinion without being rude, condescending, insulting, and sarcastic?
@Zuri - I'm standing up and giving you a round of applause right now.*
(*although, I will warn you, you are going to be attacked for writing that comment. From being called a sheep to a Socialist. My personal M.O. is to completely ignore comments by that person and a few others around here. I just skip, Skip, SKIP over their rants and feel better for it when I walk away from the computer.)
@Nadia - I think you're one of the best writers on the Stir (along with Ilina) and it was nice to watch you in this video and really see the person behind the writer.
"1. Florida is known for its election fraud in past elections."
So, the voter ID laws are well justified then? Thanks.
I never accused her of personally attacking me. (Though she did make a general indirect attack that certainly included me, among hundreds of millions of others. (see below)) She DID personally attack Ryan in the article I referenced. (actually, I believe "LIED about" would be a more accurate description.)
As for the "racism" attack, I am not going to quibble over if that was a "personal" or "general" or an "attack", as she desperately tried to keep it at the insinuation level. It was false and slanderous, and a very offensive and disgusting at that.
"Somehow to you it's whenever the left side opens its mouth, it's an attack. However, the right can say everything from Obama staged the Aurora shooting to that he's somehow responsible for an economic collapse that happened a year before he was President and it's kindly stating an opinion."
Now THOSE are "strawmen".
" If this post said that you were a lying, hypocritical racist hell-bent on destroying America, that would be attacking."
While that is certainly very typical, common, recurring rhetoric from the left, personally, I tend to characterize that as "childish name-calling". IMHO, it really does not rise to the level of substance to be qualified as an "attack".
"Nadia didn't "attack" Paul Ryan- she wrote an article you don't agree with."
No, her article contained numerous demonstrable falsehoods crafted to slander Ryan.
