Atheists Say Singing Children Are a HUGE Threat to Our Country

by Jenny Erikson on August 18, 2012 at 7:00 PM

musical notesWalk down any cellblock in any penitentiary in America and ask the convicts why they’re there. They all say the same thing: They were forced to sing songs in elementary school that included the words God or pray, or made any reference to rowing a boat ashore or holding the whole world in someone’s hands. It’s a miracle any of us ever overcome that kind of childhood trauma at all.

At least that’s the impression the Freedom From Religion Foundation is giving with their insistence that such songs be removed from Okte Elementary School’s curriculum. The Shenendehowa school in Clifton Park, N.Y. teaches kids music with hell-raising lyrics like "Thank you God for everything," "I pray the Lord my soul to keep," "Michael row your boat ashore" and "He's got the whole world in his hands."

Annie Laurie Gaylor, the co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation told Fox News, "This is not minor. It's predatory to conduct this toward a young, captive audience who would be truant if they didn't attend public school.”

I think someone needs to look up “predatory” and “truancy” in the dictionary. They’re kids. They’re learning music. Are they going to wipe out Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star too, because it smacks of sky-worshipping? Besides, science tells us we don’t have to wonder what those stars are – they are big balls of flaming gas. What are we teaching our children by telling them big flaming gas balls in the sky are like diamonds?

Seriously, it is not “predatory” to teach six-year-olds songs about God. Where was the Freedom From Religion Foundation when school children were being taught to chant “Barack Hussein Obama mmm mmm mmm”? Talk about cultist worship …

This religious-hate group swooped in on Okte Elementary School because one parent complained. One! No one is ever going to make everyone happy, and I think only offending one person in an entire school is pretty good. No one is holding that student captive, despite what Ms. Gaylor claims. Millions of children across the country never step foot in a public school, and they’re not considered truant. It’s called school choice, and some parents opt for private or home schooling.

Maybe the debate over education should be focused on how to raise academic standards, rather than eradicating music curriculum of songs that have been sung for generations and never did anyone any harm.

How would you react if your child was asked to sing one of these songs in public school? Would you run to your lawyer?

It's predatory because the school have young minds that are open to influence, I would NOT want my child singing about thanking "god". There's a huge difference between Twinkle Twinkle Little Star & openly praising some sort of Christian god.

I agree that public schools should not be teaching religious songs, that's what religious schools and churches are for. The author is obviously anti-atheist and is grouping them all into an anti-religious hate group. Most of my friends and family follow one religion or another, and they know I do not, but we all get along just fine without forcing our beliefs or lack of on each other. If my child was at that school I wouldn't get worked up enough to try and ban the songs though, but since it is a publicly funded school they should avoid religious songs not only for children without religion, but those of non-christian religions.

It might shock you to believe that parents have the right to instill their own religious beliefs within their own home and to practice their worship however they may so long as it doesn't harm others. However, when it comes to schools (unless it is a private institution) they have a responsibility to ALL the parents to keep from implementing any kind of religious environment or any sort of recognition of any sort of particular deity.

I'm sorry, but I don't feel that a public school should be singing songs about God, and I'm Christian. I'm not the kind of person who would throw a fit over it, but I really don't think it's appropriate.

There are plenty of children's songs that don't involve jamming your religion down our children's throats. Public school is not the place, there is this thing called seperation of church and state.

And I bet most those inmates you mention identify as christian.

I wouldn't like it. I'd try to change what they sing but I wouldn't call a lawyer.

The problem in today's society is that too many people don't take the lessons of these songs to heart and turn their back on (any) religion. These sings sing of compassion, empathy, and love...the tenets of being a good person. Oh wait, I forgot... Parents today prefer to raise entitled brats who only think of themselves. Even if you don't agree with a particular religion or with kids singing these songs, why wouldn't you take the opportunity to teach your child the lesson and teach about what you do believe *instead* of whining about the situation and creating unnecessary drama. Live and let live. Be a parent. Teach your kids good values instead how to be more self centered.

They are not forcing children into a religion. They are not telling children they better worship God. Singing about God or Jesus is no different than singing about Hannaka(sp?). My daughter sings a range of songs in school with different religious themes. It doesnt mean she is being told that she has to believe it.

Gee, Jenny.  I saw that stupid title and knew it was you before I even looked at the byline.  I don't think kids should be singing religious songs in public school, either.  And I sent my oldest to Catholic school. Where she sang religious songs nearly everyday.  But you open up Pandora's box with this sort of thing.  What if you lived in a neighborhood with a large Muslim population and they were singing songs thanking Allah- would it still be OK with you?  Because it sure as hell wouldn't be OK with me.

I would be appalled if my son's school had him singing religious songs. I don't go around teaching Christian children my stand point on evolution and I don't want anyone teaching that crappy to my kids.
