There are no excuses for the OB/GYN from North Carolina who challenged anti-choicers to adopt the "ugly black babies" born from women who don't go through with an abortion screwed up. Dr. Ashutosh "Ron" Virmani screwed up. Big time.
Of course, the anti-choice crowd is hopping on the disgusting racist phrasing today. They're using the doctor and the words he used when Operation Save America, a conservative Christian organization, showed up on the doorstep of his house, as proof that they've somehow won a battle in the choice wars.
But let me make this clear: no one has won a thing in North Carolina this week.
The pro-choice crowd has been dealt a blow by a doctor who said something extremely vile and inappropriate about children of color. That's clear. Even the fact that this Operation Save America group seems to have stalked him, showing up in his neighborhood where they handed out fliers to his neighbors telling them that Dr. Virmani needed to be stopped, doesn't excuse the language he used.
On the other hand, the anti-choice crowd doesn't come out clean here either -- and not simply because the tactics they used in confronting the doctor at his home were slimy and creepy. In touting their victory, they've once again ignored a salient fact that comes to light again and again in the abortion debates: if there is no abortion, then what? What happens to the baby who comes out of the womb of a mother who does not have the ability or desire to care for it. Then what?
Dr. Virmani's racial slur was wrong, but that doesn't erase the underlying message. Here's what he actually said:
Let me see you adopt one of those ugly black babies. Go ahead. Adopt these babies, OK? Take them off the taxpayers' money.
The protesters who stand at the doorway of abortion clinics, barring entrance for women in their time of need offer assistance, but it's only for so long. Once the baby arrives, the help is over, and mother and baby are left to struggle ... alone. She didn't win. The baby didn't win.
And in this case, neither sides of the choice wars have won. Both have mud on their face ... the question is, whose is dirtier?
Here's the video, by the way:
Does Dr. Virmani's racial slur negate the message that anti-choice protesters needed to hear?

I asked a woman from another Christain group protesting an abortion clinic (It's down the road from my house) that if the fetus you're fighting for grows up to be gay will you still fight for it's rights?
They avoid me now for some odd reason...
LOL!!! LoVe that comment Mary!
This is slightly off topic, but there is a great section in the book Freakonomics by Dr. Stephen Levitt about how the Roe v. Wade decision has reduced American crime rates. Fascinating read if anyone is interested.
He was picking on the stereotype that white people don't want them "ugly black babies", not saying he thought the babies were ugly.
First of all - protesters do NOT bar people from going into the clinic. And the pro-life clinics in our area all offer help AFTER that baby is born.
And most pro-lifers I know - it doens't matter if the child is gay.
That has always been my argument. Ok they don't want to allow women to have abortions then how about they adopt and raise all these babies. Babies whose mothers don't care for them that may be born addicted to drugs or alcohol with all the problems those cause or have been conceived by rape or incest. Why not adopt the babies who while in the womb were test and found out to have a horrible disease that will cause them to live a life of pain for sometimes as short as a week or as long as years of suffering. I want them to set at the side of this child as they suffer and die and know they could have prevented it. How about they take the job of a CPS worker and watch these children be used and abused and not be able to help them or watch them be torn from the only home they have ever known even though it may suck and be tossed in the system to be forgotten and shuffled from home to home. To sit and watch the children in these situations grow up without ever knowing the true love of a parent. How about they realize that a lot of children who are born from unwanted pregnancies tend to be abused and sometimes that abuse leads to death. Why they are at it they can pay the extra taxes to pay these mothers DES if they cannot afford to raise the child. If they are not willing to adopt these children they are not pro-life they are selfish people who want to force their beliefs and values on to other people while doing nothing to help the people involved.
