I didn't think it was possible, but the story of missing mom Susan Powell has grown even more tragic. Police recently released details about their three-year investigation, including her father-in-law's strange, sexual obsession with her that he described in personal diaries.
This comes six months after Susan's husband Josh, then under suspicion for her disappearance, killed their two sons and himself in a house explosion in February. The over 3,000 pages of entries painted a disturbing picture of a man who seemed to be spiraling out of control.
Steven, who was sentenced to 30 months in prison in June for voyeurism after filming his neighbor's daughters, described his unhealthy and frightening fixation with Susan.
The fact is, I can hardly control myself when it comes to her ... My biggest problem as well as my greatest pleasure lies in the fact that for over a year I have been madly in love with my daughter-in-law, Susan ... I have never lusted for a woman as I do for Susan.
He even admits to stealing her underwear, hair, and discarded hair waxing strips. It gets even creepier. The grandfather secretly taped her as far back as 2003 and watched the videos while masturbating. He would look "at her naked body under the bathroom door" by using a mirror and even recognized the behavior as "sick" but was unable to stop. There were also many photos of Susan's body, some seemingly taken without her knowledge.
When police searched a locked cabinet in his home in May 2010, they came across over 50 songs he had written about her and photos of nude women with the heads cut off and replaced with Susan's. Though he clearly was obsessed with his daughter-in-law and detailed his feelings and behavior, he said nothing about her actual abduction or death. "I would be devastated were I to find out Susan was dead from any cause. I am still so in love with her I can barely function," he wrote.
More startling, however, is the information that has come out about the night Susan disappeared. Josh always maintained that he took the boys on an impromptu camping trip while his wife stayed home the night she disappeared. The story was suspect to many because of the freezing temperatures that evening. Well, according to the report, one of her sons may have told a social worker that his mother came along, but was in the trunk. The other said she had gone on the trip but decided not to come back home with them.
Absolutely bone-chilling isn't it? For now, Steven Powell has not been charged with her death and officials say the investigation is still open and active. It must feel like a never-ending tragedy for Susan's parents, who are still fighting to figure out exactly what happened to their daughter.
