It's been speculated that in order for Mitt Romney to gain the much needed edge over Obama, he would have to pick a vice presidential running mate that qualifies as diverse. Mitt Romney has had several issues during his campaign trail but among one of his biggest issues is his in ability to relate to the average American. Being raised in a life of privilege and extreme wealth is the story of only 1% of Americans.
President Obama, on the other hand, has had the benefit of being your average American that was the product of a single-mom home in middle America, yet went on to become a Harvard Law graduate and of course, our President.
And he's black.
With racial and ethnic minorities growing at faster rates than Caucasians, the racial divide has been shifting in the last several decades with Latino and African-Americans becoming the majority-minority in this country.
What’s this mean for Romney? He will need to try and pick up some of the minority vote. Romney needs a woman, African-American, or Latino in his corner in order to try and gain some sort of edge over Obama.
Who are the likely candidates?
Condi Rice is likely Romney's best bet for two obvious reasons; she's a woman and African-American. She’s also smart as a whip. Still, she's a bit of a risk for Romney. Her association with the Bush administration may be a turn off to voters, and her alleged "liberal" views on abortion would further harm Romney amongst his most conservative supporters. Will she be enough to gain Romney some African-American votes? No. Perhaps wealthier African-Americans who are ready for this economy to shift may believe that a Romney/Rice ticket is the way to strengthen our economy. But your middle-class African-American voter will likely continue to vote for Obama with the understanding that Obama policies and initiatives are likely to benefit them rather than a Romney/Rice administration.
Next up is Bobby Jindal whose name has been thrown around by some as a strong candidate for Romney. But Bobby's subpar public speaking skills and upbringing in Hinduism may not serve the conservative voters well. From a diversity standpoint, Jindal is not a strong representation of our minority population in America. I'm going to guess that the Latino and African-Americans will find Jindal equally as relatable as Romney. Jindal will give Romeny the edge he needs.
Finally there's Marco Rubio. Rubio, who recently received the support of the largest Tea Party group this week is likely what will make a Romney/Rubio ticket unfavorable to the minority vote. Many African-American and Latino voters believe because Rubio's uber conservative platform is bad for middle America and minorities.

rightside - like I said, the "Anybody But Obama" vote is an unintelligent vote. Thank you for proving my point so nicely. How many months has Romney been campaigning now and he still hasn't told you what he will and will not do for America. There should be a space on the ballot that says "Not Obama" instead of "Mitt Romney" and then you could but an X there and show the world how intelligent you all on the Right really are. Not sure why you quoted a comment I used on another thread, but thank you for thinking so highly of what I wrote, that you're promoting it elsewhere.
PonyChaser - So, if I'm a Socialist and a Marxist am I a Fascist too? Or are you one of the few right-leaners who knows there is a big difference? If you do, let me tell you, you are a rare breed!
JAFE - your country is an embarrassment because of your Republicans! Do you think the rest of the world started laughing at you when Obama got elected? Hardly. We'd all been smacked across the face by Bush's Recession and Reagan's trickle down failures and when you finally put a Democrat back in the White House we were thinking "FINALLY things will get better!" And they absolutely have.
Speaking of how Canadians view Republicans, here's an awesome comment somebody made on Jezebel the other day:
SERIOUSLY YOU GUYS.
I have had it up to HERE with your bullshit, GOP dudes, and I AM A FREAKING CANADIAN. The people you routinely make fun of have better healthcare, smarter children, $30,000 more per household, less unemployment, marriage equality, and better beer. And do you know what we do, as we sit up here in our multicultural not-igloos and guzzle maple syrup? We gawp. At you guys. In horror and disbelief. Because our conservative government ends up sounding downright REASONABLE compared to Republicans.
FIGURE YOUR SHIT OUT AND STOP ACTING LIKE CHILDREN. FOR THE SAKE OF THE BABY JESUS YOU LOVE SO HUGGY BUGGY MUCH.

That quote is so freaking spot on and so like what I and my fellow Canadians have been feeling like lately.
Oh, goodness! I thought I was being ignored? Well, happy days.
Let me ponder .... how many months did Obama campaign without telling us what his Hope and Change entailed? About 12, right? Or should we go with how many months he's been in office without doing anything? That would be almost 43 full months. So, let's compare - that's 55 full months of stagnace vs. 12 or so of Romney not getting his plans across to Canadian cellar-dwellers who claim to be thrilled (or not, if we're being honest) with their own country yet spend sooooo much time trying to effect change in someone else's.
Perhaps you might want to compare their records on jobs again? Or have you not figured out yet that lower is better on that one? I mean, it's only been pointed out to you at least twice, and you still use it as a fall-back. "Unintelligence" at work? Me thinks yes.
And you're welcome for cross-quoting. I find that comment so evidentiary of "unintelligence" that I had to bring it along. Even more illustrious was your next comment, and the post you cut and pasted from Jezebel, showing us that you're not the only syrup-guzzler up there that is so bored with US politics that you spend your free time posting your "opinions" ad nauseum to people who don't care what you think. Misery loves company? Feral cats hump anything that moves? You go ahead and decide - they both seem right.
Yes, that's what I said Procrasto. You want Obama FOR YOU! Because you can't vote in your country the way you want you NEED us to do it for you. Your quote is exactly how I thought you think. LOL!!
Who are you talking to? Me?? Did you forget that I have a SIN number. If I wanted to go to the crappy doctors you have to go to, I could go too but ours are much better? But a beer sounds good. I think I'll go pop a top.
Just for the record Procrasto, I was really beginning to like you until your real self appeared here and you got very nasty with this comment on Jul 7, 2012 at 1:03 PM
I was directing it to rightside, JAFE, I thought it was pretty clear as I called her by name. And no, I didn't forget that you have a SIN number (horrah, you're one of 35 million or so) nor did I forget your view of the Canadian medical system. All I know is that I have never experienced the things you say are terrible about our system. I myself just had to deal with a medical situation recently, where I had to visit various specialists. From my initial doctor visit to specialists to tests to results and medication took a total of about a month and I had nothing but stellar care from every medical professional I saw. So, it really doesn't matter to me what you think of our system...it works fine for me and mine.
As for your other question about whether Obama has been good for Canada. Well, let me tell you, in 2008 we lost some money in our investments. My friend had it much worse. She lost $40,000 in her retirement savings the month before she retired. Lucky for her, she had been saving her entire life and that was only a part of her portfolio, but it was still a huge hit to take. Do I like the fact that the market has rebounded under Obama and continues to get better? Hell yes, of course I do. Do I think that a Romney presidency will continue that upward trend? No. That's totally based on the fact that it was a Bush presidency that crashed the economy and Romney intends to go back to Bush-era policies. The writing is on the wall for me.
Have a great rest of your day.
