There's no excuse for locking your own child in a chicken coop and making her live for days on just bread and water. But neighbors in Butler, Georgia say mom Diana Franklin and husband Samuel Franklin allegedly has one hell of an excuse. Literally. Franklin supposedly said that the Bible made them abuse their adopted daughter.
It sounds like it could lead us down into a religious argument. But considering all the good parents I know who happen to be Christian and aren't abusing their kids, I'm going to skip that quagmire and go straight for confusion. Are there really people who think it's OK to live "by the Bible," even when the laws in America say it's wrong? Have they actually read the same book?
Franklin was allegedly referencing Proverbs 13:24, the portion of the King James Bible that reads, "He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes." As a result, cops say her 15-year-old daughter was forced at times to wear a dog's shock collar, which Franklin would set off with a remote key fob. Other abuses described include living in a chicken coop for days on end and perform manual labor around their home in the oppressive heat.

Not exactly what I've read in the Bible, but let's say it was. Let's say that the Bible really makes a case for abusing your child. The Bible isn't the Constitution. It's an incredibly old book that, although considered sacred by many people in this country, includes some very dated material and some outright atrocities. I was raised in a Roman Catholic household, and I've read enough of the Bible to know it's chock-a-block with things that would land your butt in jail.
Just take a look at these examples that get an A-OK in the Bible:
1. Killing Anyone Who Hits Their Parents. Forget an eye for an eye. If you read Exodus 21:15, the crime of hitting one's parents is punishable by death. So next time your toddler takes a smack at you, are you going to get out your gun? Didn't think so.
2. Burn an Entire Town to the Ground. The cops would call it arson, but Deuteronomy 13 gives you leave to set an entire town, and all its "plunder" on fire if the people who live there don't believe in the same God as you.
3. Kill the Kids of Criminals. The law might be satisfied with putting some evil guy on death row, but not Isaiah. Chapter 14 advises you kill his kids too, after all, they must be punished for the sins of the father.
4. Rape. In the prophecy of Babylon, Isaiah (once again) calls from the women to be ravished, and not with their consent.
I don't think I need to continue this list to prove the Bible defense is no defense at all, do I? Certainly not for abusing your child ...
What do you make of this "excuse" for child abuse?

For Christians, the Old Testiment is to be used only as a reference. We are to live by the New Testiment, Jesus' sacrifice created a new convanent with man which trumps any previous convanent. We are called to love each other as Jesus loved us, with sacrifical love, if necessary. Last I looked, child abuse was not sacrifical love.
These people and those like them do not truley understand the Bible nor do they wish to dig deeper so their knowledge is as complete as possible. There are many things in the Bible that at face value are off putting, but when you research and understand, you come to realize that they are wonderful verses. Ephesians says a woman is to subgigate herself to her husband, but that doesn't mean a wife is a slave. If you truly research this verse and chapter, anyone will see that is simply means we are to love our husbands sacrifically. And our husbands are to do the same. They are to love their families as Christ loved the Church... meaning he would lay down his life to save his wife and children. Sorry for the lesson there, but what I am trying to get at is you have to understand how the Bible applies today! It is still relevant if you understand and I am sure there is nothing about abusing your children!!
Just as irresponsible as using the Bible to excuse abusing your children, is someone writing an article that uses Bible verses out of context in order to make a point. Shame on you Jeanne!
First of all I can't stand this writer, can CafeMom/the Stir PLEASE remove her!! She never has any real constructive critiscism about anything. Secondly all the quoted bible verses are from the OLD testament. They are OLD for a reason. Any Christian in a bible based Church knows the difference between using the bible as a guide in the living relationship with Christ and using it as an excuse to do unChristian things. I think Jeanne Sager should go back and read the bible thoroughly and if she doesn't exactly understand something seek a bible study group or pastor for clarification before making assumptions about the context of certain bible verses. In every religious group (even non Christians, athiests included) there are extremists and they are not representative of that particular religion as a whole, so please stop bashing on Christians, Christianity and parents in general we all parent differently, let the law decide what to do with these two we are not here to judge (that include you too Christians!), that is God's job.
"They took the Bible out of context. And most parents understand how to read the Bible and follow it. When you are reading the Bible, you have to understand the original translation and the history of the day, so that you can interpret it correctly. There are a lot of things the Bible says that don't appear to make any sense, unless you understand the history. Not knowing it and using what you *think* you read as an excuse for abusing someone is extremely poor behavior.
Also, it is perfectly possible to live by the Bible's actual teachings. I really don't like how these types of extremists bring out the religion bashers. What they did IS NOT CHRISTIAN. And you know, just because people disagree on their interpretations of the Bible and just because they lead imperfect lives isn't a reason to throw out the Bible altogether. Nobody's perfect, regardless of worldview, so we can't discount a worldview because the people living it out are flawed.... Do you see the problem with that argument?"
Yeah that.
folks the Bible does not say abuse your children it says correct your children to make it say abuse you have to take it totally our of context
God would never condone these people's actions. There will always be someone somewhere taking something out of context. These people are psycho and that's that. I'm a Christian in my right mind. What they did is not and never will be okay. And I think this article is rediculous! Anything in the old testament is from thousands and thousands of years ago. Things were very very different. We are to live by the principals in the NEW testament, ya know the ones about loving one another. Oh and to not spare your child the rod. Does not mean abuse them, it means to teach them. To discipline them, not beat the poo out of them. The bible does also say to follow the laws of the government. That would mean no abuse too. So quit judging the Bible just because someone feels like using it as their excuse!
