Missing Woman's Family Gets Terrifying Text Message From Her Phone

by Sasha Brown-Worsham on July 12, 2012 at 11:25 AM

According to her family, 26-year-old Rajwinder Kaur is not the kind of person who would just "disappear." But that is exactly what has happened in Queens, New York, where the young woman has mysteriously fallen off the map after her sister received a text message that read: "The girl with this phone is dead was smiling."

What could it mean? Is the text message from her killer? Or has she run away, sending her family on a cruel search for her? New York police believe she joined a cult, but her family feels otherwise.

Whatever happened to Kaur, the text message does lend an air of mystery and clearly leaves her family with an inability to rest until they know the real story. If she had joined a cult, why would she send that message?

Police believe that selling all of her possessions on eBay and her recent spiritual awakening after a trip to India are both indications that the young woman left on her own volition. Still, they haven't ruled out foul play.

My heart goes out to her family because even if she meant that her old life was dead or that the girl she used to be is no longer, what could her family possibly think?

This story is similar to a story last December when Aisha Khan, a 19-year-old student who "disappeared" in Kansas, was found safe. It was unclear why she disappeared, but she did send a text message to her sister claiming a stranger was harassing her.

Her family was plunged into a similar nightmare of not knowing. Obviously, it's better when these women turn up safe. But it's hard to imagine why anyone would purposely put their families through such agony.

It's hard to imagine anything worse than losing a family member and having no idea what horror has befallen them. It seems almost unimaginably cruel to do to one's family.

So let's hope Kaur DID just join a cult. Let's hope she is somewhere where she is safe. But if she did so and she sent her sister that text message, she is also clearly in need of a lot of psychological help. What a horribly selfish thing to do someone who loves you.

What do you make of this mysterious text message?

This was such a wild message and of course it feeds fears that the woman is no longer alive. I hope she is found alive and well. Unless she went insane, I don't know how one could send a message like this to a family member.

It could be that someone else put in that text, or she was forced to put in this text. Either way, it is a very strange and scary situation for the family. Not knowing if she's safe can be heart wrenching, and the family doesn''t understand the message. I feel she did join a cult, and wrote the text to tell her family she not the girl they knew, and the text says that pretty much.confused

Her friend admitted to buying her a ticket to Texas.. there seems to be some evidence of an arranged marriage which she was "not comfortable"

it's possible she joined a cult or something close to it.  The fact she was getting rid of her worldly possessions and returning from India with a spiritual awakening could mean that she met someone over there that influenced her deeply, brainwashed (?) her, into leaving everything including her family behind.  in saying that the girl with this phone is dead was smiling could actually mean she is very much alive, but has a new identity now after joining the cult and a comma wasn't put in the message, but states that in doing what she did apparently is happy with her choice and smiling.  I just hope that the family can find her and bring her back and get the help she needs to clear her mind and realize the wrong she has done.

I hope she is found ok. That text message was creepy and odd. If she joined a cult surely she could leave a better message for her family. Joining a cult is never a good thing but at least they would know she's alive.

I'm tired of missing women. :( There is a woman from my town who is missing, she went on vacation with her ex and their kids and never returned home. He said he strangled her and dumped her off the side of the road then disappeared. Please visit this page and look at the flyers with their pictures. Neither of them have been found yet.
