Mitt Romney, Religion & Brad Pitt’s Mama

by Jenny Erikson on July 10, 2012 at 9:39 PM

mitt romneyA Missouri newspaper recently published an opinion piece by one Jane Pitt, who just happens to have a son named Brad. You may have heard of him. Anyway, she defends Mitt Romney’s religion against all of those evangelicals that don’t like the fact that he’s a Mormon. Mrs. Pitt writes:

"Any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is a Mormon.

"Any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney’s opponent, Barack Hussein Obama — a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for years, did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage."

Then the media reported on her “anti-gay” opinion piece. What, exactly, is anti-gay about that? A person can absolutely be pro-traditional marriage and have no problem with the gay community. My gay friends know I love them dearly, will absolutely stand up for them to make their own life choices, and that I’m pro-traditional marriage. Some of them agree with me on that issue and some don’t. They all respect my beliefs and opinions.

Moving beyond the gay issue, can we talk about what the letter really says? There’s a faction of evangelical Christians that do not want to support Mitt because he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I’ll be the first to admit that Mormons have some wacky beliefs (seriously, go look up Kolob), but don’t we all have beliefs that seem wacky to “outsiders”? Try explaining eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ to someone unfamiliar with the concept of communion.

My point is that I don’t think Mitt Romney’s Mormonism should be a make-or-break issue for evangelical voters. Barack Obama has been bad news for our country, has skyrocketed our debt, and saddled the middle class with the biggest tax hike in history, aka Obamacare.

And besides, how can people complain about Mormon beliefs while accepting Obama’s religious past, which includes two decades in Jeremiah “God Damn America” Wright’s church? There is nothing inherently contradictory to the Constitution in the Mormon religion. Unless you consider beer an addendum to the Bill of Rights, since Mormons don’t drink. In my opinion, that might be their wackiest belief of all.

Evangelical Christians would do well to remember that a vote Against Mitt Romney is a vote for Barack Obama. Thanks for pointing that out, Mrs. Pitt.

There's not going to be new taxes to pay for healthcare and middle class Americans are getting tax breaks.  Stop watching Fox news and maybe get on some fact-finding.

And honestly, how could you vote for anyone who is interested in taking rights away from people because they themselves don't "believe" in them?  It's fundamentally un-American.

Also, super classy adding the "Hussein" in there, like that has anything to do with anything.

There are so many other reasons to vote against Mitt Romney than the fact that he's a Mormon. He lies, he changes his mind, he harbors his money in order to avoid taxes. He claims he is an exemplary businessman, but then he doesn't know where all of his money is... and some of you want to trust him your country's finances? His record as governor is abysmal. Try to find one person in Mass. who has anything nice to say about him. If he becomes President, the right wing really does deserve what they get. Bush 2.0,Recession on Steroids Edition.

@tinypossum, I thought the part about her having friends was either satire or poetic license!

Jane Pitt's article is anti-gay. The "Christian conviction concerning homosexuality" is certainly not accepting of gays. Thats okay though, I don't agree with it but this is America and people have the freedom to believe what they want. Some people still think inter-racial marriage is a wrong. In fact, mormons did not allow blacks to have the priesthood (held by every LDS man and an important part of a household) until 1978. Dark skin is seen as a remnants of the seed of Cain and was is God's way of marking those who chose Lucifer's side in the war in heaven. Anyway, the LDS church is full of truly wonderful people and I urge everyone not to jump to conclusions about its members. I always think it is funny that my most "tolerant" friends are the first to bash Mormons. SMH. I won't be voting for Mitt but his religion was not part of that decision.

I genuinely just don't understand how you can say you support your gay friends to make their own life choices but say that you only support traditional marriage... How do those two mesh? They seem to strongly conflict, and it sounds more like you support their right to make life choices so long as they are among the pool of "acceptable" options? If their life choice IS to get married and you don't believe they deserve that choice, it seems more like lack of support...

I'll bet Jane's favorite DIL is Angelina, brags about her at dinner, and hangs her pictures all over the house.

Jodieharp, after premiums go up and the middle class can't afford them, there will be the mandate / tax. Also, what rights is Romney planning on taking away? Including his middle name isn't classy? She didn't make it up, its his name.
Procrasta, again - drop the lib rhetoric. Take a real look at the recession, when it started and who started it. Besides, historically the repubs have been better financially for this country. The dems haven't balanced a budget since the 60s. Nobody has to love Romney, they just need to see that Obama isn't getting it done.
