Attention parents! When someone with a really weird story wants to move into your house, you might want to think twice before you say yes! Here's betting the mother of a 15-year-old boy stalked across an ocean by a 25-year-old British alleged child molester is wishing she had.
Police in St. Augustine, Florida say 25-year-old Michael Hunter came all the way from his home in Birmingham, England, to have sex with a 15-year-old American boy he'd met on the Internet. When he pretended to be 17-year-old Gary Johnson, a classmate with cancer, the 15-year-old's mom let the alleged pedophile move into their house.
Which part of this sounds bizarre to you? All of it?
Exactly!
I am wary about who comes into my house as it is. If they're actually moving in, and going to be around my kid, I want name, rank, and serial number. If something smells fishy, there's no way I'm sleeping easy with them in the house.
I'm going to give the mom here the benefit of the doubt. Kid -- or at least a guy who appears to be a kid -- tells you he has non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and your heart is bound to ache for him. Childhood cancer hits me right in the guts. And when a kid says they're having family strife, the first thing you think as a Mom is, "OK, how do I help?"
But if a kid has cancer, wouldn't you think staying WITH the parents would be best? I know I wouldn't take on the complicated mess of health care, especially not with something as serious as cancer.
And wouldn't you want to actually talk to a kid's parents before they move in? Any kid? Even one who doesn't have cancer? I'd want to let them know their kid is safe, for one. Not to mention, I'd be afraid of legal action if I suddenly took custody of someone else's minor child.
Oh, and there's that pesky British accent. Should have been a bit of warning. But hey, what do I know? The strangest person who has ever moved into my house for awhile was my brother.
Hunter, by the way, has been arrested and will be charged.
What kind of background check would you require before someone moved into your house? What if they were a "kid"?

My mom took in my friend when we were in High School. She was 16, and I was 15. We had been friends for years! My mom had talked to her mom on the phone on many occasions (both moms wanted to know who their kids were with)! She also took in a couple of my brother's friends for a few weeks. All underage, and problems at home. Cancer or not, your kids' friends are easy to want to take in.
But there are stipulations here. My mom knew these kids for years before they stayed more than a couple days at a time. They were in our house at least a couple times a week.
I would take in my daughter's teenage friends if they needed somewhere to stay for a while. Cancer or not, sometimes people need a break from "home". But you bet that I would KNOW these kids, AND their PARENT(S)!
god, why do I insist coming into your "blogs"? let's blame the mother for EVERYTHING, did she actually do her research before she let this guy in, no. was she trying to help the best way she could yes. I wish CM would seriously take a look at their "writers" I would like to know the actual facts of this case without hearing a one sided condescending opinion.
Taking in a neighbor kid you have seen around the block who is in trouble, or a friend of your child is one thing; a complete stranger? Never! I don't care if my kid has a pen-pal across borders, he isn't coming in my home. With the world as it is today, you can't trust anyone without a thorough background check, and even that is risky. This time it was a pedifile (which, by the way, is horrible), next time you could be murdered!!
Yea, youd think she'd atleast call the parents first before making a desicion. My mom used to let random homeless people stay (we had a extra trailer out back with running water and such), we'd feed em, let em stay for a few days and then take em where they wanted to go and dropped them off. Luckly she was able to read when something was up, and luckly I do too cause I'm the exact same way.
Aint got no house yet though but I will feed them or give them a ride, cause you never know!! Even the smallest things can brighten a person day.
