Obamacare & Tax Hikes: Do the Math Before You Freak Out (VIDEO)

by Adriana Velez on June 29, 2012 at 12:22 PM

moneyEver since the Supreme Court ruled on the Obama administration's Affordable Care Act, one word has been coming up over and over again: TAXES. The way I'm hearing some people tell it, you'd think the new law was going to tax families tens of thousands of dollars just to pay for a bunch of lazy bums' health care. But reports of insane new taxes for middle-class families have been greatly exaggerated. (If not downright fabricated.)

Let's come back down to Earth and do the math. I know! Math is hard, right? It's so much easier to spew whatever bullshit the pundits are making up. That's why the Kaiser foundation has created a health reform subsidy calculator that lets you cut through the hot air and just figure out exactly how this is going to affect your family's bottom line.

Middle class families not covered through an employer will get a tax subsidy, not a tax increase. The Christian Science Monitor used Kaiser's calculator to figure that a family of four with a household income of $60,000 a year would gain a $9,308 tax subsidy. (FYI, that's the opposite of paying a tax.) That would go toward paying for health insurance, which would otherwise cost them an estimated $14,000. So with the tax subsidy, they're paying around $5,000 a year for health insurance, making it much more affordable.

In 2009 it was estimated that health care costs top $8,000 per person, per year. And of course that amount rises every year.

What if you cannot afford to buy health insurance? The new law deems you exempt if your insurance premiums would exceed 8 percent of your income after tax subsidies and employer contributions. You may qualify for Medicaid since the bill provides funds for states to expand their programs to cover more people. Then again, your state may opt out of the expansion. If you're concerned, you should let your governor and state legislator know how you feel about this.

Who's gonna pay more taxes? People who do not qualify for Medicaid and who refuse to get health insurance will be fined a tax penalty: Around $695 per person or 2 percent of your income in 2016. In Massachusetts, under Romney's health care mandate, only 1 percent of people choose not to carry health insurance.

Also, high-income individuals will pay a 3.8 percent tax on investment income. P.S. You are not high income.

Have you calculated how the new law will affect your family?

The Kaiser foundation is a highly biased organization whose agenda is a single payer health care system. How 'bout using a more reliable source? Try this info and see where you really stand financially. http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2011/01/obamacare-and-new-taxes-destroying-jobs-and-the-economy

I ALREADY have health insurance for my family of 3 and Blue Cross Blue Shield will raise my premiums substantially now.

So if I am sick of paying 18K + a year for insurance and drop it, I don't really get to keep my preferred doctors / health insurance and have to get on the public dole.......

I lose options so I can have the privilege of paying for everyone else's..............Just great...............

This makes me sick. An individual should not HAVE to have health insurance if they truly dont want it. And furthermore, you shouldnt be taxed for choosing that decision for yourself.
My husband calculated how much more they would be taking out of his paycheck since this passed. 5% more of his paycheck is being removed. And thats on top of the already 35% they are taking for each paycheck. So say he is making 1200 for his paycheck, the government is taking out $300, and $170 of that is paying for everyone else's healthcare on top of the $300 he is paying for his own and his child's healthcare. So in total that is nearly $500 a month he is shelling out each month for healthcare. Not to mention since this passed, his child's premium raised another $100, so he will now be paying $600 a month for Healthcare alone. That is half of his paycheck. And you're saying that people are exaggerating about how much this is going to cost them?

    Florida Mom,

You think Kaiser is biased but think the heritage foundation is reliable?  Wow.

    Talk about bias.

Well then, Doomy, if you shouldn't have to buy health insurance, you also shouldn't be permitted to go to a hospital when you have a heart attack unless you can prove you have the cash to pay the bill in full when you enter for treatment. Same goes for having children, for when those children fall in the playground and break an arm, so on and so forth. I'd be fine with not requiring everyone who doesn't qualify for Medicaid to have it if they were able to make it legal to turn away those who CHOSE to opt out and take chances with their health. Can you go into a restaurant, not order because you aren't hungry, then grab someone's steak on the way out off their plate without paying because you finally became famished? People are so shortsighted they're worrying about in the now payments that are very very small when compared to the cost they would really face if they had a tragedy. Prices for things rise not because of a bill that isn't even in full effect for 2 years, but because companies are greedy and raise rates to up their profits. Why is milk going up? Gas going up? Orange juice the same price for a 59oz container instead of 64? Because of Obamacare too? Think in the long term, or, follow your conservative fellows' advice and just "get a better job". Look, see how easy it is? Didn't think so.

We HAVE insurance and now our premiums will rise significantly. We are a one income family with 1 child and one on the way. High risk pregnancy limits me from working so yes, we are freaking out thank you.
