Ann Curry Didn't Get 'Fired' After All (VIDEO)

by Jeanne Sager on June 28, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Ann CurryI'm not sure what I was expecting to see when I tuned in to watch Ann Curry say goodbye to Today show viewers after her "firing" from the co-anchor seat. I guess I expected more of a goodbye? But this long-time Curry fan will take it!

Turns out Curry is not fired so much as demoted. Her new job will keep her with NBC News to do "the work that most of us got into journalism to do." Ahem, folks, in case you didn't realize it before, this proves it.

Ann Curry? Is a class act.

Instead of throwing up her middle finger to the network that has blamed her for a dip in viewers (instead of, oh, I don't know, the complete drivel that Kathie Lee and Hoda serve up every morning), then sitting pretty at home, she's actually sticking around! And as tearful as she sounded, I dare say the job of being a regular old reporter/interviewer sounds like something Curry will actually enjoy. Take a listen:

OK, I think I may have gotten chills at the word "groundbreaking," you?

I am not happy to see Curry kicked out of the co-anchor slot, but if any job is appropriate for her, it's one that plays to her strengths as a journalist. Because at the end of the day, that's what she is. Thank goodness someone realized it! And thank goodness -- for us -- that she's taking the high road and sticking around.

What do you think of Curry sticking around?

The only reason I ever liked that show was because of her. I like when she does Dateline specials too. That being said, I rarely watched the Today show and that's because it's the same recycled crap and WAY too many commercials. Annoying.

She was absoLUTEly fired from Today. Were we watching the same program? She got the 'Siberia' transfer, aka the beginning of the end. She was unceremoniously dumped, and given a few stiff accolades by her couch 'comrades,' and one commercial later... voilà, Guthrie's next to Matt. They gave Meredith a week-long send-off after a year, and THIS shabby treatment to Ann after 17 years. Shame on them. NBC didn't want to pay out Ann's contract without milking her for more work as the door hits her on the way out. She'll go to another network in a year, watch and see... Her farewell was such a sad and pitiful moment. NBC execs are cowardly, cheap and amoral. Good luck, Ann!

Thank you for such a great reflection of Ann. I have watched her on the Today show. Sometimes, in her eyes when reported 'fluff', I noticed a longing for more. I could just hear waht she was saying in her head..."Really? This is journalism???" I hated she was passed over when Katie Couric (ick) left, but thought she chose not to step in her shoes as to keep her integrity as a journalist!! I love you, Ann Curry!! As a mother of four girls, I always had them watch her report the news. I always hoped they used her as a mentor. The Today show has been subpar for years. Commercial, commercial, and young women who seem to have more looks than brains. Kathy and Hoda??? What is that??? Thank you for allowing be to able to voice my support and opinion. I wish I could do more. Chin up, Curry! They don't deserve you!!!

Totally agree this was a pitiful sendoff -- It seemed forced and totally not sincere from her "co-achors". After 17 years this is the way they send her off?? What a shame!! And by the way -- did you see the completely closed body language from Natalie Morales -- SHE IS PISSED SHE WAS NOT NAMED ANCHOR -- so she will be leaving soon I predict!!!

Hello, GMA! After growing up with the Today show on every morning and watching as an adult, today will be the last time I watch.  Between NBC's shoddy treatment of  Ann and the degree to which Matt Lauer has become an arrogant condescending bastard who is just flat out unpleasant to watch, I won't be tuninng in again.

Ann Curry shows us once again what a class act she is! I have looked forward to watching her every weekday morning, she has brought so much to this show this is unbelievable. Ann’s intelligence, empathy, aplomb, honesty, and ability to make us, the audience, feel enfranchised in whatever she was doing, made her the glue that held this show together. Replacing her is a poorly thought-out move. I hope the entire array of NBC sponsors feel our disappointment as well, as we Ann’s loyal fans boycott their products in protest. Shame on you NBC for removing Ann, you have certainly lost my loyalty. And shame on you her co-anchors for not preventing this – where is your solidarity – at a minimum you should have ensured, you should have insisted on a farewell commensurate with Ann Curry’s long association and incredible contribution to the Today Show. I am angry and I hope that other Ann Curry fans will take the time to let NBC know how you feel about this! Ann I will always continue to support you!

I am so disapointed with NBC because of thier outragous discissions lately. Ann Curry is class, talant and goodness. If the ratings were down before she was booted off the today show, I'll bet thier going to hate the ratings now that she is gone. You can ad me to the Leaving the today show list. I have to turn it off anyway when Kathy Lee and Hoda come on. We love you Ann and we'll be looking for you. Some other network will see your bright light and be greatful that NBC has lost thier minds. ALSO I'm still mad that NBC cancelled Harry's Law. By By NBC !

Anne Curry has been the one person that prompted me to watch the Today show over the past 20 yrs. I am so tired of Matt Lauer's arrogant demeanor, often expressed from an over-paid male who should be the one replaced. Anne has the real B____s and courage to the journalism we all are compelled to view. She is The Class Act. Never has there been one moment that I thought "oh she shouldn't have said that or worn that or behaved that way. I loved Katie Curic too but even she has had some disappointing moments. Anne you are the most loved. Always be true to yourself.
