As if losing a child weren't enough, a mother in South Carolina has had an added burden loaded on her shoulder this month. She now has to pay to have the blood of her son cleaned off the street where he was killed by a drunk driver. It's the sort of bill that makes you wonder who wrote it: man or machine.
Loretta Robinson said she was having a hard enough time coming to terms with the loss of her eldest child, Justin Walker, when the bill came in. Written to him -- the deceased -- it demanded $50 for the municipality that had to send someone out to rid the street of evidence of the horrific tragedy. Talk about victimizing the victim!
I understand that times are tough, and cities and counties don't have a whole lot of wiggle room in their budgets. Taxpayers bear an awful lot of the burden as it is that a little creativity in finding funding is almost always in order ... almost.
But there's something about a bill sent to the family of a dead man to clean his blood from the highway that really rubs me the wrong way. It's so heartless that I have a hard time imagining the politician who suggested this little cost-saving measure. What's next? Telling rape victims the should have to pay to prosecute their rapist?
Here the Robinson family is, victims of a senseless crime, and the municipality is essentially blaming their son for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The real criminal here is Anna Gonzalez, an illegal immigrant who has been convicted in killing Justin, and who faces 17 years in prison ... but not the bill.
The people running local governments have to remember that they represent people, not just numbers. Those people may be taxpayers, yes, but they're human beings too. Something we taxpayers have to accept is that we pay for all pay for the services afforded crime victims because one day that could be our family on the receiving end of a little compassion.
What do you think should be done with this bill? Should Loretta Robinson have to pay to have her son's blood cleaned from the street or should the cost be written off?

The drunk driver should have to pay the bill, not the victim's family. Sad story.
r u f ing kidding me...this is the sickest shit I ever heard..
Ok, I've thought about this for a while, and I'd like to revise my answer... My answer stays the same IF the criminal is a legal resident/citizen of this country.
But this woman is an illegal. I don't care if she was brought here by her illegal parents, or if she crossed the border yesterday. She's here illegally - broken law #1. She drove drunk - broken law #2. She killed an innocent person - broken law #3.
Deport her, ban her from returning, and bill her home country for the cost of her deportation, legal fees AND the cleanup. It is ridiculous that her victim's family should have to pay for the cleanup, and it is ridiculous that the American Taxpayers should have to now pay for her housing, food, medical care, etc., for the next 17 years. Send her back.
wow this is crazy the mother should not have to pay that omg i cant believe someone would even send that one its not the victims fault two the imergrant is the one in the wrong place and her the stupid bill if the mother reads any of these please i am so very sorry opur country hates helping people in these kind of times. im so very sorry for the mother my regards she should not have to go through this and i wouldnt pay if it were me rip it up and burn it
WTH??? I agree....The driver that is responsible should be the one to pay.
There is a good chance that an undocumented drunk driver isn't going to have auto insurance. If she did then the family would have gotten a settlement and could have paid from that money. The undocumented driver faces 17 years in prison. In 2010 -2011 the average cost to keep a woman in prision was $135,000. If she spends 8.5 years in prison that is $1.15 MILLION at current cost. Who is going to pay for this? Not the drunk driver. We need to stop thinking about who is going to pay $50 and start thinking about who is going to pay the $1 million plus to plus to prosecute this woman and keep her in prison. We could deport her.
Many of you failed to read the the drunk driver is an illegal alien. Yes he/she should have to pay, odds are they will not. Same laws don't seem to apply to them. Whether they even serve the sentence, odds are they will not be deported under this administration. In this case if the perpetrator of the crime cannot pay, then the cost should be absorbed by the city. It is disgraceful that this city should have ever contemplated sending out this bill.
