What Do You Think of President Obama's Immigration Decision?

by Lindsay Ferrier on June 17, 2012 at 11:54 AM

President ObamaPresident Obama's decision to allow young illegal immigrants to remain in the country is stirring up strong opinions among Republicans and Democrats alike.

Some view Mr. Obama's decision as a compassionate, ethical choice-- After all, these immigrants didn't make the decision themselves to enter the US illegally-- They were brought here by their parents.

Others say it doesn't matter who made that choice-- The fact is that these young immigrants are here illegally, taking jobs and resources that rightfully belong to legal immigrants and American citizens.

There's plenty to talk about here and that's why we're putting the issue to our political bloggers this week, asking them what they think about the President's new immigration policy.

We'll be hearing from them all week long-- In the meantime, what are your thoughts on the matter?

The conversation on this topic has been buzzing all weekend long on our Moms Matter Facebook page, with some calling the president compassionate and others asserting that the president made this immigration policy shift in a not-so-subtle effort to win the Latino vote in swing states. Check out just a few of these moms' thoughts:

"So if you break the law long enough... It becomes legal?" wrote Marcy. "BS."

"My nephew married an illegal immigrant, she came over w|her parents when she was 3," wrote Stephanie. "I don't think she should be deported for her parents choices.. they made that choice for her. There are lots of things we don't like.. But turn the tables.. What would we do for a better life? Punish the parents, not the children."

"Those kids will get the jobs and the college money long before your kid will," wrote Karen. "Think about all that work you've done. All the taxes you've paid. Guess whose kid goes to college and whose stays home. and guess whose money will pay for those illegals to go to college and take your kids' jobs. Ticked off yet?"

"All who are indignant about this need to learn a lesson in the history of this country. WE took it away from the native Americans who were living here," wrote Evelyn. "Unless we are full Native American, then our ancestors were immigrants to this country. Stop beating your chest and proclaiming to be a true American citizen if your origin was European or whatever... I think the President is right, very moral and understands the difficult situation these young people are in."

"Many of these "children" are well into their 30's and I do not see it as cruel to not allow them to continue to benefit from the crimes of their parents," wrote Nicole. "Has anyone bothered to notice the unemployment rate and limited opportunities for our own youth?"

"I understand anger against those adults who come here illegally, but anger against people who had no choice?" wrote Anamaria. "Young people brought as children who grew up here and know no other country, home or even language? How can you be so angry at them? It's not their fault! Where is your compassion people?"

The immigration issue is certainly a hot button one. Here's what out political bloggers have to say:

If their parents really truly came to this country "for their children" then they should have tought their children how to be honest and live a dignified life full of integrity by becoming LEGAL. By remaining illegal all they have tought their children is how to live a live of dishonesty and irresponsibility. They hold their hands out and say that they deserve special treatment because their parents broke the law, and we reward their lack of integrity by giving them everything they want and allowing them to stay here. Doesn't seem like they've done squat for their kids except teach them to get what they want by making excuses and it makes me want to throw up.

I think he has violated his Constitutional Duty, violated his oath of office, and side-stepped Congress. His order is illegal, and he has committed a felony by allowing people who are unqualified apply for work permits. He should be arrested, prosecuted, and put in prison. And if Congress doesn't have the spine to do that, then they ALL need to be replaced.

I think it shows how far he will go for votes. Trying to show he's for the little people while he's living it up with George Clooney and SJP. For all the people who are now deciding to come here either legally or illegally, that choice has now been made for them. Why do it the legit way when they will get rewarded for doing it the easy way??? We really needed another 800k population to compete for practically non existent jobs.........way to go Obama. Like another commenter said, see you on the soup lines!!

Like the policy or not, there is a bigger issue. The president does not have the legal authority to do this!!!

Agree with this decision or not, he doesn't have the legal authority to bypass Congrass and make this decision! How is he even allowed to do it?! Will Congress do anything about it?! We are in trouble people. There's a reason our constitution doesn't give all the power to one branch of government.

@Matthew Hudson, tbrucemom, while this is flagrantly illegal, and should be an open and shut impeachment, it is unlikely that that will happen due to politics. The Senate democrats are certain to put party loyalty above the law, and refuse to do their sworn Constitutional duty to impeach.

I call it treason, and most of the Americans I network with, call it the same. Not 1 American I have spoken with, thinks Obama should remain in our White House. They want him gone, now. Congress in not going to do anything. The only real American in our Congress, Representative Steve King spoke out immediately. Not one public word, from any of the other so called U.S. Representatives.

I don't agree w his actions! I am native American & outraged about his decision!!! I don't look for handouts because I don't qualify in my state but the Hispanic lady in front of me buying 300 dollars worth of groceries @ Walmart using her EBT card & loading it all into her brand new escalade really makes me wonder if my education that I paid for on my own (not finished yet but still paying for it holding 3.89 gpa) is even worth it! We r struggling as a country economically to house, feed, & cloth our own that we have to allow more handouts that r not here legally! I am no politician & I don't understand politics but I know when I asked for help I was turned away but my hard earned taxes is paying for an illegal for some assistance!!! I love my country but I am finding it hurts me too!!! & I am native my ancestors were here long before our country was founded practicing ancient religions that still go in today!!! I am not mad @ the lady for having her card but the system who gave it to her! God bless America!!!

Pure pandering politics and, worse, an illegal and obvious power grab that flouts and ignores the Constitution of the United States of America. A slap in the face to all citizens. He must go; he is a danger to our Republic.
