A second so-called zombie apocalypse cannibal crime is making headlines today and this time it's a man and his roommate. Alexander Kinyua, a 21-year-old man in Maryland, is accused of killing his roommate, dismembering him, and eating his heart and brain. Awful, tragic, and disgusting.
What is, perhaps, saddest about this story is that the victim -- Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie, 37 -- will now be remembered for being part of this so-called "zombie apocalypse." Last week, this would have been an awful, disturbing tragedy. This week, it's a pattern.
Except it's not. This accused man was mentally ill if he did this thing. But this isn't a "pattern." This isn't the zombie revolution. This is a tragedy and a story of mental illness. But it sure is funny to say it's a zombie, right?
Normally, I am not one to get sanctimonious about such things. After all, I am pretty jaded to awful stories with years as a journalist and now a blogger behind me. But come on, people. This is an awful, tragic, disturbing story, not a funny news blip.
Someone is accused of killing his roommate, EATING his brain and heart, and we are all: "ZOINKS! IT'S ZOMBIES!" We are looking pretty shallow right now.
Looking back on the Miami "zombie" case, it's a tragedy, too. Ronald Poppo, the victim whose face was eaten, lost 75 percent of his face. The hospital is raising money for his care and he will need extensive reconstruction he can't afford. He has been homeless for 30 years.
But instead of crying over this poor man and all that he has been through and all that he is lost, we are laughing about zombies. Well, shame on us. This is not a zombie apocalypse. These are two tragedies, unrelated and completely heartbreaking. Two families have lost people they loved.
I don't know about you, but I don't think that is funny or entertaining at all.
Do you think this is the zombie apocalypse?

Is it just more widespread coverage of these digusting events that have happened all along and we are just now hearing about them on a daily bases becasue that is what our culture is interested in now, or if these events are being caused by some new "designer drugs"? With each day a new case is bound to have some people yelling zombie, some trying to be funny but there are some who truly believe that is what is happening. Yes, it is very sad for the victims and I do not think that people are trying to belittle or laugh at the loss of their life, I think that these kind of crimes are so frightening and hard to wrap your mind around that people have to make a joke out of it rather than accept that there is this kind of evil in our world.
I agree. I'm so sick of seeing my facebook newsfeed blowing up with pictures that poke fun and almost glorifying this horrific crime all because it's "Zombie" reminicent.
I completely agree with this entire article!!! I am so sick and disgusted by all the "funny" zombie pictures people are posting and the sayings they are coming up with. These events are sick and tragic and shouldn't be taken so lightly. Zombies dont effing exist and its disturbing that people are making jokes about this.
hmm. well, i was into "funny zombie pictures" before these two tragedies, and i don't see myself stopping because of this. now, if you're referring to pictures of these particular individuals as zombies, that's just effed up. but if you mean just zombies in general... well it's not new. hell i've spent the last four years playing left 4 dead on my xbox, long before any "real" zombie outbreak.
what happened to these men is a terrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to the families of both men. but that does not mean that the "zombie culture" (cuz yeah, there is one) should die. it just seems prominent now because of the media coverage of these two unrelated, completely heinous crimes.
dirtiekittie - I'm personally talking about zombie pictures with phrases specifically about these cases and making light of them. I know people have always been into zombies and I find nothing wrong with that at all.
@courtney - thanks for the clarification. i'd agree with you that it's absolutely disgusting, certainly moreso in mainstream media that can be more prolific globally. how disappointing in us as a society as a whole. i wasn't aware that there were people doing this, but then again i tend to ignore a lot of that type of media coverage (the sensationalism of it all is so glaringly obviously - but it's sad that there are some who don't realize what sensationalism is).
I have to agree with the first poster. The reason so many people are "making light" of the situation is because it's a defense mechanism. When we are faced with something so horrifying and irrational, we make jokes because our poor brains just can't comprehend that these things happen. It's human nature, doesn't make it right or wrong, it just is.
