7 Patriotic Quotes to Inspire Your Memorial Day

by Jeanne Sager on May 26, 2012 at 10:00 AM

Arlington National CemeteryWe've been celebrating Memorial Day for long enough in this country that we should know what it's all about by now. The fourth Monday in May is supposed to be the one day we all come together as Americans to honor all those who have died at war, fighting for our country.

Sadly, these days it looks more like a day to get drunk and eat a lot of hot dogs in a lot of places around the country. Which is all the more reason to remind people exactly why the federal government gives us a long weekend! And what better way then some stirring quotes about our nation's heroes?

Because the men and women who have laid down their lives for us over the years deserve something more than a cold can of beer hoisted sky high today, don't you think? Even if it's just the few moments of silence it takes to read through these quotes about what it takes to be a true hero, you can give them that, can't you?

Or perhaps you'll take it further? Share them (maybe on Pinterest?). Spread the word. Help our nation's heroes be truly honored.

What are you doing to celebrate the men and women who have died for our flag?

These are all very good quotes but I wouldn't call them patriotic. To me, patriotic would be something to inspire pride in being an American such as JFK's "My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

What is a memorial? Who is ruling Jerusalem right now! Erza 4:20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

The state of Israel converted themselves to a false god, to become king David worshippers! Was King David saved, not (Acts 2:34). The twelve tribes of the children of Israel are the children of Jacob *Revelation 21:12* The truth will set one free (Hebrews 7:14)

I was returning to the USA after the first gulf war and had a woman spit on me while I was in uniform while in a stateside airport. She called me a "baby killer" and a "war monger". I thought of this poem then, and every day since then. It is the Soldier, not the minister Who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer Who has given us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer Who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Soldier, not the politician Who has given us the right to vote. It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag. Charles Michael Province, U.S. Army

James, now that's an inspiring patriotic saying! Sorry you had to go through that at the airport. Thanks for everything!

These were awful. I got to three and my eyes glazed over. Patriotism and truly celebrating Memorial Day means supporting our troops, whether you agree with war or the "Commander in Chief" and with putting all politics aside. Our troops have all different religious and political backgrounds themselves and, most importantly, they fight to defend your right to say/spew whatever you want, whether THEY agree with it or not.
