Voters head to the polls today to decide on North Carolina Amendment One, which would determine whether gay marriage is banned in that state. If the amendment passes it would mean that “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.”
Ha, oh, that's fabulous! So gay people can't have a legal union that would allow them to share health benefits, have the right to make medical decisions for each other, or benefit from tax laws involving income and estate. Yes, just what the country needs. More gay men and women marrying straight men and women for the purposes of fitting into society!
Yeah, sorry, everyone. I don't care what your Bible tells you, because I don't live in Biblical times. I live in the here and now, and so do you. In 2012, gay people pay taxes, they are American citizens, they go to war, they work, and they deserve the same damn rights that heterosexual people have.
And you know what happens when a society shames gay people out of marriage? Shames them into not being able to have or adopt children? Shames them into feeling they can't stand up before God, their family, their friends, and their country, and get married? They marry for convenience. They marry to be "normal."
Tell a group of people that they are wrong, they are bad, they are immoral because of whom they love, and some of them are bound to do whatever they can to fit in. Even if that means being dishonest, not only with themselves, but with others.

Totally totally TOTALLY agree. When my husband came out to me, we'd been together for 16 years. Would never wish that experience on anyone.
For anyone who thinks they might be in this situation.... or already knows they have a gay/bi significant other, visit http://www.straightspouse.org for some amazing support. :)
For the people who are LGBT, love who you love, be loud and proud, keep fighting for what is yours and what you deserve as American citizen, the same rights as heterosexual couples.
And lastly, forget the haters, they're not worth your time.
I really don't see how this is the government's business or place to decide. Why are we wasting time, energy, and money on these debates?! Banning gay marriage doesn't create jobs. Banning gay marriage doesn't end war. Banning gay marriage does not reduce the national deficit.
Live and let live, people!
Oh, I agree, and wish I still lived in NC to vote against this stupid thing.
Though gay marriage is already banned in NC - it's against the law already. This ban would put it in the state constitution, so taking it a step further, if you get what I mean. Hopefully it won't go through, and in time we'll see the laws changed, too, to allow for equality....
