Violence is almost never the way to solve a problem. But if anyone was ever begging for a punch in the nose, a certain homophobic North Carolina pastor making news today fits that bill. During a Sunday sermon, Berean Baptist Church pastor Sean Harris voiced his support for an anti-gay amendment up for debate in the state capital by telling fathers that they need to punch their toddler sons if they are acting "girly" and "rein in" their "butch" daughters.
Of course now that the Internet has called him out for his vile suggestion that dads crack their son's limp wrists and put his stamp of approval on child abuse straight from the pulpit, Harris is backing off. Don'tcha know he was just kidding?
Uh huh. He sounded real hilarious when he said he was giving parents a "special dispensation" to treat their kids like punching bags. Take a listen:
With "jokes" like that from Christian pastors who are supposed to be proclaiming the Good word of a Lord who advocated turning the other cheek, is it any wonder violence against LGBT members of society continues to rise? Any surprise that LGBT youth are at a four times higher risk of committing suicide than their straight peers?
Disagreeing with someone else's lifestyle is protected by the U.S. Constitution and the right to free speech. Getting violent against them for it, on the other hand, is still against the law -- and rightfully so. And hurting children, in particular, is just plain sick. You walk over the line from ignorant ass to scum of the earth when you start picking on 4-year-olds.
When -- if ever -- is it OK to make jokes about child abuse?

AerisKate- love your avatar! I also have to represent my state and say that NC is NOT as bass-ackwards as this moron would like people to believe. He's disgusting.
With that being said Procrastmom, just because I believe Savage calling teenage names and my religious book bullshit, doesnt mean I agree with what this so called pastor said.
momtolittleg - like your avatar, too!
Awful. There has got to be a psychological exam that goes along with being in positions of influence. I am a Christian and these types of Christians make me sick. Child abuse is NEVER a joke. I've called out relatives for "joking" about punching their kids in the face if they step out of line (said child was a toddler) because once we trivialize that heinous crime, it ceases to be serious and more children will fall between the cracks.
Shockingly enough not a single Christian has yet to come on this thread and defend this man's statements. Very different from what happens when liberals/gays/gay advocates say something wrong or hateful.
You can't punch the gay away or pray it away.If anything could be punched or prayed away I would hope it's stupidity. Then I would book a flight to see this guy and start praying and punching away!I just tested his theory on my 15 year old gay daughter right now LOL.After I punched her in the arm I asked her if she found boys more attractive yet.She said yes I think it's starting to work, mom.I detected sarcasm in her voice.Accept your kids for who they are and love them. You can't choose to be gay and you can't choose to be straight. If that was the case I would have chosen gay after I divorced my husband,he's a real douche. Why would anyone care if their kid was gay? What's the problem? What can a straight kid do that a gay kid can't?Get married and have kids?Well not all straight people can or want to have kids and marriage laws are changing.Gay kids can and do grow up to be successful and have families.Your kid isn't going to fulfill all your hopes and dreams for them just by being straight.
I grew up in this church. I 100% support this pastor. He has released an official retraction.

if anyone will actually take the time to read. I have listened to this sermon in it's entirety. I will continue to support this pastor. This was taken completely out of context. it was in poor taste, and he even admits he didnt think about what he was saying before he said it. the ONLY reason this is even making news is because NC is voting on gay marriage this week.
Floridamom, there are plenty of articles about christians saying hateful things about homosexuality that are then backed up by other christians agreeing with them. You just haven't seen all the anti-gay blogs. They are pretty scary and it's only a matter of time before someone posts that they think this guy is very wrong for his comment but that they think homosexuality is wrong.I can't stand people that say they don't hate gay people and don't believe in hating anyone then they comment that homosexuality is a sin and against what they believe.
Oh wow! Here we go!Creepy how TippyD wrote that before I could even post my previous comment
