Santorum Quits Race Without Endorsing Romney (VIDEO)

santorum quits

Yesterday we heard that Rick Santorum was suspending his campaign to be with Bella at the hospital. But today he made a bigger announcement: "We made a decision over the weekend that the presidential race, for me, is over and we are suspending our campaign, but the fight is not yet over."

And here's the shocker -- during his speech this afternoon he made no mention of Romney. No endorsement for Romney? That was the very first question reporters had for Santorum the moment he ended his speech. Santorum made no reply, just left the room with his family.

So that's it? He's going to endorse Romney, isn't he? He has to, right?

One possible scenario is that he is planning to endorse Romney, but not yet. Maybe he wants to plan a separate announcement with Romney -- and he wanted this announcement to focus solely on concluding his campaign.

More from The Stir: Rick Santorum Chooses Family Over Country

Santorum ended his speech by saying he would continue fighting to elect a Republican president and ensure Republican control of Congress. I think that could be his way of signaling that an endorsement for Romney is coming.

And Santorum really doesn't have much of a choice. Newt has already said he would endorse Romney if he became the nominee. And there are no other viable Republican challengers now. I imagine Santorum is probably not exactly thrilled with the idea of backing his former rival. But he also knows not endorsing Romney will just further splinter the Republican party and make things even easier for Obama.

But then there's this...

I believe I remember a quote where he said we're better off with Obama than Romney.

I think the only person he needs to worry about endorsing right now is his baby girl in the hospital. Everything else can wait.

He used his daughter by mentioning her illness during the Iowa speech, now he is once again using his daughter as an excuse to quit! He is despicable!! he quit because he has no chance of winning - what stopped him from quitting during his daughter's previous hospitalization in January? He is a sore loser not to endorse Romney!

Why does he have to endorse Romney now. Maybe he want to do the gentleman thing and talk to Romney first and get together with him and do a press conferance together.

Some of you have so much hatred in your heart, that you cannot even let this guy bow out gracefully

come on ladies! Sitting here with my newborn little girl on my lap, popping online to check email after a full workday, so I'm extremely busy, but even I have had enough time to investigate a little and come to know that DR. RON PAUL is not only viable, he IS THE REPUBLICAN FRONTRUNNER. The man is a former ob/gyn doctor who has delivered 4,000+ babies and is a 12-term Congressman! And when I say frontrunner, I mean it. Statistics bear this out in the form of rally attendees, exit polls, etc. But all we hear about is Romney. We should all be asking ourselves, why? Goldman Sach$ is one piece of the puzzle. hugs and sending lots of restful sleep everyone's way. ~N.

@kritika - yes, he said something like Romney was the most dangerous man for the Republicans to put up against Obama. Which he said on camera. But then when he was questioned about it he said he didn't say it. Not surprised he hasn't endorsed Romney, with the mud he slung at opponents from his side of the aisle. If I were Mitt, I probably wouldn't accept his endorsement anyways. Santorum may be a good father, but he is a political fool. I only wish I could have watched Obama stomp him in a debate.

Hate to see people fooled by this president.
His debts, his lying comments and his hidden hatred for US.
