The Trayvon Martin & George Zimmerman Story Is About Media Bias, Not Racism

by Jenny Erikson on April 2, 2012 at 11:08 PM

liberal media biasSince I wrote about the tragic death of Trayvon Martin last week, I’ve gotten some very interesting feedback. I wrote what I wrote because I was bothered by the media coverage condemning George Zimmerman as a murderer before allowing our judicial system to work.

Never once did I say that George Zimmerman was innocent or justified in his actions. Trayvon did not deserve to die, and I’m absolutely sick for his family. I would’ve left well enough alone, but this story had made national news, and the media was misrepresenting the facts of the case to paint Zimmerman as a cold-blooded killer that murdered a little boy because of racism.

Trayvon was not a little boy. At seventeen years old, he was legally a child, but physically he was a 6-foot-tall man. He was not sunshine and rainbows -- he had a vulgar mouth, and was on suspension from school for drug possession. When Zimmerman apprehended him, he chose to bash the dude’s head into the ground instead of trying to call the police.

The real issue here is not who was right or wrong, because both men were wrong. Zimmerman should have listened to the police and stayed in his car, and Trayvon should have restrained himself from resorting to physical violence. The issue here is the media jumping to conclusions to push their ‘racism is still rampant’ agenda.

After I wrote the post, I got into an interesting Twitter conversation with a fellow political mom blogger on the liberal side of the aisle. She pointed to ‘evidence’ that Zimmerman had not received any blows from Trayvon, and claimed that I had misrepresented facts. It was kind of ironic, given that the story I wrote was about media misrepresentation, and I had carefully and thoughtfully researched all evidence available at the time.

If the evidence I had turned out to be wrong, so be it. It doesn’t change my opinion that people jumped all over this to condemn someone without a trial by a jury of his peers. It turns out she was wrong. Trayvon had bloodied Zimmerman, and the media’s eagerness to grab onto a narrative without examining the evidence just proves my point.

The number one thing I have heard from people that didn’t like what I wrote is that I was blatantly denying the racial aspects of this case. I got pointed to the 911 recording reported by NBC, where Zimmerman points out that Trayvon is black. I still didn’t think that proved Zimmerman’s supposed racism, because Trayvon was black. Why is it racist to point out defining characteristics when trying to identify a person?

But the story doesn’t end there … apparently NBC selectively edited the tape, conveniently cutting out the audio of the dispatcher specifically asking Zimmerman to identify the suspect as “black, white, or Hispanic.” This is my point exactly. The media has moved beyond ignoring evidence to creating it.

There are so many wronged parties involved in this incident that it’s hard to name them all. A media eager to feed us a story rather than report the facts has wronged all of us. A public taking the biased media at face value has wronged George Zimmerman by condemning him without allowing our legal system to work.

The most wronged of all is Trayvon Martin, who lost his life in a tragic incident that never should have happened.

While I still believe that Zimmerman is guilty of racial profiling; I don't necessarily think it is the same as racism. He is guilty of manslaughter at the least. You are right Jenny (gasp), they were both wrong. Why the hell did Zimmerman get out of that car? Why didn't Trayvon go straight home? Why? Why? Why?
While I think it would be ignorant to ignore the racial aspects of this case; I also don't think race is the only factor involved.

Tot-> You missed my entire point. You are assuming that Zimmerman attacked Trayvon, and he defended himself. Where is your evidence? The only thing we know is that Zimmerman (wrongly) went after Trayvon. Did he question him? Did he attack him? WE DON'T KNOW. That's my point. We just don't know. To make assumptions about things that we don't know is wrong and reckless.

I am new to cafemom and I am so relieved to see an article out there calling the media on its bs. When I first heard about Trayvon's murder I was horrified that a boy was murdered simply for the color of his skin. I heard NBC 's version of the 911 call and it no doubt seemed that Zimmerman was profiling this young man. I decided to do more research on this case and every story I find are conflicting. And today I hear that NBC edited the 911 call. I am still horrified that a young man is dead and my heart aches for his family but now I am also disgusted with our media. We obviously don't know all the facts to this case. I've decided to not pass judgment on Zimmerman until I hear more. Innocent until proven guilty in my eyes.

You imply that Trayvon attacked George with your passive "Trayvon should have restrained himself from resorting to physical violence." How do you know that George wasn't wrong on both counts? Stick to the facts if you're arguing bias. Your opinions demonstrate bias.

Right on the money, Jenny. And shame on the media for sensationalizing this boy's death by further interjecting race into the mix with that edited tape.

The media has turned this into a huge mess. It is hard to differentiate between truth and rumors. I'm glad that the media picked this story up because it forced the police to do a better investigation but I'm tired of all the misinformation out there. I disagree with you on the fact that trayvon should have restrained himself from using force. I am sorry but if someone follows me and then approaches me I am going to fear the worse and probably react the same way. IMO trayvon was defending himself not Zimmerman.

I also feel like stereotyping had a big role in this but I don't know think its about race as much as people think it is. I am more inclined to believe that Zimmerman received preferential treatment based on who his father is and knows.

Unfortunately, w/o the media (in this case), we would have never known about it. The Sanford PD was content to apparently believe Zimmerman and his father. Personally I believe that Zimmermann should have been arrested that night because he, by his own admission, targeted Martin. This put a teenager on the defensive side of a gun. further, if someone accosted me on a public street with a loaded gun, I'd have to defend myself in some way -- anyway possible. Therfore if Martin `attacked' Zimmermann, I could most certainly understand why. Seems that the `stand your ground' law should apply to Martin and not the other way around. I can only hope charges are filed soon.
