Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about the death of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old kid who was shot at close range by George Zimmerman while he was on neighborhood watch duty. The media has had a heyday with this, demanding justice for Trayvon. Even President Obama hopped on the Trayvon train, saying, “… if I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon,” and raising money for his reelection by selling hoodies.
Trayvon was black, so obviously some race-ity racist tea-bagging Sarah Palin fan murdered him in cold blood. The eagerness of some people to jump to conclusions before examining all the evidence never ceases to amaze me. No, Al Sharpton, Trayvon was not killed because he was black. And I’m pretty sure Rush Limbaugh didn’t kill him, despite what MSNBC host Karen Finney says.
More from The Stir: Why George Zimmerman Should Pay for Trayvon Martin’s Murder
Trayvon is dead because he was in the middle of bashing some dude’s head on the pavement, and that dude happened to be armed. Trayvon’s death is tragic, and the force Zimmerman used could be debated for days on end, but let’s not pretend that the kid was a martyr and that Zimmerman was a racist. I’m pretty sure that neither Hispanics nor Democrats are allowed to be racists, and George Zimmerman was both.
Trayvon was not an innocent little kid with a colorful bag of skittles. At 17, I’ll still call him a kid, but the guy was a 6’2” football player who was on a 5-day suspension from school for marijuana possession. He was not shot in a predominantly white neighborhood, he was shot in a neighborhood that was 49 percent white. It takes some pretty creative math turn 49 percent into a majority.

There’s no reason to believe that Zimmerman was into identity politics. He came from a multicultural family that included Latinos, blacks, and whites. Trayvon went by the Twitter name @NO_LIMIT_NIGGA, and re-tweeted things like, “Hahaha Hoe u got USED fa yo loose ass pussy.! Tighten up.! #Literally” Super classy.
The jury is still out as to whether Zimmerman’s actions were permissible under Florida law, but the media’s capitulation of this story to promote its own agenda is inexcusable. Not everything is about race. Sometimes it’s just a very sad story of a life ended too soon. And maybe a lesson to not bang people’s heads on the ground. It might get you shot.

I agree with megan. I know a lot of hispanics that are racist. I also agree that the comment made by Jenny was stupid. I don't feel that this Zimmerman was racist because Trayvon was a black male. I feel he was racist because he called 911 46 times in 12 months and as far as we can see were all cause he saw black mans doing nothing. He should have been booked and questions later. I don't understand how Zimmerman was "standing his ground" when he was following Trayvon? I also don't understand that if Trayvon was "bashing" his head in the pavement to the point that he thought it was either he dies or he kills then why did he not go to the ER until the following day?
I waffle back and forth on Zimmerman's guilt myself but I always fall back on this was someone's son. And he was just walking. I rely on neighborhood watch just like many homeowners but their role is to watch and report. George Zimmerman did that. He was not the police so he should not have followed or pursued. If people feel he had a reason to be alarmed then why can't it be understood that so did Trayvon when he realized someone was following him?
You're right Trayvon was no martyr. But it's posts like this like make me have to constantly remind me children they can't afford to mess up in the slightest bit outside my house. Because there will be people who will bring up every thing they do to show or prove that when something bad happens, their side of the story can't all be trusted.
It is pretty sad that you cannot state the FACTS of a case without being called a racist... This case is awful. I feel for his parents in every way possible. However, it's not a case of a hate crime or race card. Zimmerman should never have been carrying a gun when he was patrolling on behalf of the neighborhood watch, Trayvon should not have attacked him for being followed. period. No race card involved. Trayvon was clearly no angel, and not this baby-faced kid we have seen all week, but that doesn't mean he got what was coming. BOTH of them made HUGE mistakes. Zimmerman carrying a gun when he wasn't supposed to, and Trayvon for going after Zimmerman when he was returning to his car. The media has turned this into the racial fire storm we now see. Unfortunately for so many reason, Zimmerman is the only one left here to blame, and that is exactly what the media is doing. He has culpability, but he is not the only person to place blame on, and it wasn't a back vs white issue. People and the media are spinning it that way. Just sad for both parties involved.
Jenny, Jenny, Jenny...stick with politics.
None of us know what happened that night.
I do know that the Stand Your Ground Law is too easily abused.
