Sexist Laundry Tag Should Be Hung Out to Dry

sexist laundry tagWhen Emma Barnett picked her boyfriend's pants up off of the floor in her bedroom, she found something interesting. The label, which was sewn into the back of the "trousers," as labels often are, read: "Machine Wash Warm or Give It to Your Woman, It's Her Job."

Not funny. And it's not just "not funny" because of the complete lack of originality and, well, humor; it isn't funny because it seems like out of nowhere lately, blatant sexism seems to be not only rampant, but totally okay.

Before I get into it, couple things. One, like Barnett said in her piece for the Telegraph, I fancy myself as someone with a pretty good sense of humor -- I can laugh at (and occasionally even write) some blue stuff. I worked in the writers' room for sitcoms for six years, and let me tell you, it's a male-dominated environment, and it isn't for the faint of heart. Even though the anti-woman jokes are often stupid and purely for shock value, like Barnett, "I am the type of person who can stomach, and often smile along." But dude. Lately, it's out of control. And these silly little pants -- which are made by Madhouse -- are the icing on the cake.

Very recently we had Rush Limbaugh and his deplorable comments about Sandra Fluke. (In case you haven't heard, he called her a "slut" and a "prostitute.") Then shortly after that, there was Mitt Romney, who simply said of the situation, "Well, that isn’t language I would have used." And before this, we had Karl Lagerfeld calling Adele fat and Susan G. Komen defunding Planned Parenthood. What is going on? It's as if we've taken 100 steps backward. It is 2012, right?

Perhaps it's something contagious that's going around, like the flu. Perhaps it's because of the GOP debates, and all their birth control talk. I really don't know. But I'm confused and pretty frustrated and I'd like it to go away.

I know it won't, though. I know. So, at the very least, I hope the stupid label on these stupid pants goes away. Because even if it was meant to be a joke, apparently not everyone will take it as one.

And, again, it just isn't funny.

Do you feel like sexism has been on the rise lately?

OMG, we are not victims!!!!!  Stop making everything out to where women are victims.  You want women to have equal rights, and be like "men", but every time a woman is called a name or a joke said at her expense, you get your thongs in a bunch.

Grow a sense of humor.

By the way, I would not even think of asking you out for a date if you were available.

Stop making me agree with you billsfan. It's unsettling.

Eh - I kind of thought it was funny, and I'm a huge feminist. I think billsfan1104 sort of has a point, you can either take every little thing as a major affront, or roll your eyes at the stupidity of it and move on. Because at the end of the day, what better shows a woman's progress: a woman who gets twisted in knots over the tag on a piece of clothing, or someone who gives it a glance, shrugs it off and doesn't let other people define what her role in life should be?

"freedom of speech",  if you don't like it, dominate your boyfriend and tell him he is not allowed to wear their brand.

awwww lolol Nat, I would say the same thing, because I agreed with you on something on another blog.  lololol

I wanted to also add to my comment.  How did she now what the tag was saying, unless she was reading the instructions on how to wash them.  hmmmmmm

I actually think it's funny...does that mean I hate women too? :))))

I think its funny and to think otherwise is stupid. Part of the problem with the world today is that people cant realize a joke. 99% Of sexism or racism is because people have to read more into something in todays world and make it a big deal.

So I'm stupid because I don't think it's funny? I'm not offended at all, but it didn't make me laugh, so if it was meant as a joke it was lost on me. I do have a very odd sense of humor though.

I think it's funny! Sorry I guess for the people that are offended by this....
