Mitt Romney’s ‘Seinfeld’ Blunder Proves He’s Not One of Us

mitt romneyMitt Romney should just stop pretending to be someone he's not. It's like when your dad chaperons your middle school dance -- it's obvious he's just as uncomfortable as you are, his huge smile and attempted dance moves can't hide the fact that he'd rather light himself on fire than stand there another minute listening to Katy Perry and watching 13-year-olds grope each other. That's how I see Romney, as an embarrassed Dad, when he wears those terrible blue jeans and talks about "regular folks." It's painful to watch because it's clear it's just an act.

Take, for example, the GOP debate last night. Romney tried to show us, once again, that he's just one of the guys. This time it was a blundered Seinfeld reference that induced a nationwide cringe fest.

The crowd erupted in applause after the Governor talked about restoring a promise that Obama broke, and while basking in the love, Romney joked, "As George Costanza would say, when they're applauding, stop."

We always get where Romney's coming from, just like we understand why Dad's trying to do the Dougie, but it doesn't make it any less difficult to watch. According to BuzzFeed, the real Seinfeld quote that Romney was likely referencing came from Jerry, who was talking to George. It went: "Showmanship, George. When you hit that high note, you say goodnight and walk off." Jason Alexander caught the quote and responded on Twitter.

Romney gave it a good go. He tried. But he needs to forget the jeans and forget pop culture and just wear the business suits he's comfortable in and talk about money and politics and health care and all that good stuff. It's his facade that makes him seem like a total toady, even if he really isn't. I find it way easier to accept someone who stays true to themselves than someone who's trying too hard to fit in.

I mean, the man is super rich and has amazing hair, so clearly, he's not one of us. And I think that's OK. Just enough with the charade already.

Do you think Mitt Romney is trying too hard to be "one of us"?
