Rep. Bob Morris protects us from Girl Scouts! Most of us think of the Girl Scouts as a pro-female organization that teaches leadership skills and sells yummy cookies. But some right wing politicians and members of the media would instead have you believe it has more sinister goals -- namely, brainwashing young girls and selling sex and abortions. The latest rant against the Girl Scouts comes from Rep. Bob Morris, a Republican in the Indiana legislature, who is so offended by the Girl Scouts that he cannot -- CANNOT -- in good faith support a resolution celebrating their 100th anniversary. Why? His reasons are so moronic they're almost laughable -- emphasis on "almost."
In a letter to Indiana House Republicans, which has since gone viral, Morris said that he did a "small amount of web-based research" and was disturbed by what he found. He called the Girl Scouts a "radicalized organization" and a "tactical arm of Planned Parenthood" before running through a laundry list of its many, many crimes including:
- Promoting "homosexual lifestyles."
- Aligning with honorary president Michelle Obama's "radically pro-abortion" viewpoint.
- Allowing transgender females to join, "just like any real girl."
- Having role models that include feminists, communists, and lesbians.
- Encouraging sex.
I would pay good money to see this man's Internet history queue -- which is my attempt at making a joke about the absurdity of this situation. But, really, it's not funny at all. If Morris is opposed to the Girl Scouts because it has liberal leanings, then fine: Putting his daughters in a different organization may be an appropriate response. But to publicly politicize, exaggerate, and condemn an organization that has helped so many girls and women because it has different viewpoints is not only wrong, it epitomizes everything that's infuriating about the GOP right now.
Girl Scouts, contraception, women making their own decisions about health care, whether women should work outside the home -- these are all things that the majority of Americans decided long ago were things that were good for women. Yet, many Republicans on the extreme right are fixated on these issues -- instead of much more urgent issues like the economy, jobs, energy -- hoping they can gain votes by speaking out against these measures of equality that most of us hold not just dear but indelible.
Sure, there will be a few fringe supporters that creep out of the woodwork. But in the process the GOP is alienating a much bigger group of voters -- women. And the backlash that results from the estrangement will NOT be pretty.
Do you think the Girl Scouts are dangerous?

He is a moron.
"Having role models that include feminists, communists, and lesbians"
Feminishs and lesbians, the horror!
What an idiot. Him and Santorum should be BFF's.
No, the Girl Scouts are NOT dangerous!! Both of my daughters are Girl Scouts, and they are being taught to be leaders, taught teamwork, and the value of community, and giving to others. My daughters are strong, independent and respectful girls... and I credit being Girl Scouts as part of them learning that.
At a cookie booth this past weekend, a man stopped by and started ranting about how he cannot support the Girl Scouts because they support Planned Parenthood. Our girls (9-10 year olds) don't know what that is nor should they be faced with an angry adult and his poltical and ethical views. Our Cookie Mom chased this guy off very tactfully.
We teach these girls sisterhood and how to be strong, kind girls, good friends and citizens. People need to keep things in perspective. Aren't there more pressing issues for our legislators to deal with?
What? They're not teaching these girls how to be "subservient" to their eventual husbands? They're encouraging young girls to think for themselves and be self reliant? AND they have "be kind and helpful" in their creed? To borrow the perfect phrase from Kritika, THE HORROR!!
The Boy Scouts have stood their ground and refused to surrender their mission.
The Girl Scouts have caved to political correctness and that is disappointing.
[A "transgendered" boy (yup, his mother decided this to be the case at the ripe old age of 6 or younger & pushed him into the limelight, poor kid) was allowed to join the Girl Scouts. Does anyone know of any "transgendered" girls who have attempted to join the Boy Scouts? I've not heard of any instances, to date -- just curious.]
Was “Healthy, Happy and Hot”, a Planned Parenthood brochure, distributed to or otherwise disseminated to a group attending a panel sponsored by Girl Scouts USA?

I don't confront the Girl Scouts & their chaperones selling cookies at my local grocery store, but I don't buy them. I stopped buying them when I learned of their affiliation with Planned Parenthood.
Alyson, ele4phant, I see what you're saying.
My point about the 6 year old joining is that I question his parents' (not sure if there is a dad in this household) judgment in publicly declaring "what he really is" at such a tender age.
Although a different set of facts, it reminds me of the California lesbian couple who are administering hormone therapy treatment to their 11-year old adopted boy who, they say, wants to be a girl. To me, the California case is child abuse. The kid's 11 or so and they're pumping him full of hormones.
In both cases, these childrens' best interests are not being served, IMO. At least let them grow up some and make their own, more-informed decisions.
