Sarah Palin has political power. No one could deny that. But even so, her recent declaration that she is not ruling out jumping in the race should there be a brokered Republican convention this summer is a little unnerving. Just when you think it's safe to get back in the water. She's back!
Palin is many, many things. She is a highly entertaining and motivational woman. She is a mom. She is a runner (her half marathon time is excellent!). She is a funny and passionate talking head. But one thing Palin most certainly is not is presidential material.
Regardless of whether you like her or you don't, few would say she is smart enough or has the skills necessary to lead this country. She has things she is good at, but that (thank goodness) isn't one of them. Here are five reasons Palin needs to stop terrifying teasing us all with this "I might run" nonsense:
- She is way more successful outside of politics: Palin has had much more success using her voice and her energy to make money for herself. Her success outside of politics towers over anything she did while she was involved with politics. She shouldn't dismiss her success in other areas so quickly.
- Her gaffes are cringe-worthy: Palin is lovely to look at and she has the sort of spunk and rah-rah spirit of a high school cheerleader gone rogue. But book smart? She isn't. Personally, I want my world leaders to be able to find one another on the map and have some ability to carry on an intellectual conversation without a teleprompter. Her blood libel comment (and many others) shows such a strong lack of knowledge, it's downright humiliating for her and for all of us should she ever be elected.
- She has done reality TV: No President of the United States should ever do reality TV, period, end of story. Simply put: It is undignified.
- She likes to 'go rogue': This is a great quality in some areas of her life, but a president needs to be able to play well with others. Palin has proven time and again that she can't do that. It's inspiring and entertaining to watch, but in a leader, it's a pretty scary quality. A good leader must trust that he or she doesn't know everything. They have to listen to their advisers and take their thoughts into consideration, too. Palin is not a good listener. In fact, she doesn't even read newspapers, a fact she all but revealed in her disastrous interview with Katie Couric.
- She already lost one election: If you ask many Republicans, Palin is the reason John McCain isn't the president. Whether you believe that or not, she lost a major election. It wasn't even close. So, really, that should have been a sign to her.
Do you think Palin should consider running?

No, but not because she's not "smart enough" as you put it. Something about that statement rubs me the wrong way. Men who would probably be "smart enough" according to this blog post have not done a very good job running this country. Being book smart and going to an Ivy League school don't necessarily make a good president.
I think she is smart, but I also think she is a low class tacky douche.
Billsfan1104: Conversations shouldn't require a teleprompter, but speeches often do! Can't blame Obama for using a teleprompter during speeches.
I am assuming, based on your other writings, that you are an Obama supporter. So let's look at his record on some of your important points....
"...gaffes are cringe-worthy": Some of Obama's hits: "I bowl a 129... it's like Special Olympics...", "I don't know what the term is in Austrian," in 2011, he signed the Westminster Abbey Guestbook - dating it 2008, claimed that 10,000 people were killed in the Joplin, MO tornado (12 people died), referred to Hawaii as part of Asia.
"have some ability to carry on an intellectual conversation without a teleprompter": like Obama does, NOT answering a question with a 2500 word, 17+ minute answer?
"a president needs to be able to play well with others": Obama is famous for his snub of longtime US friend, Benjamin Netanyahu, leaving him sitting in a room of the White House.
I am not arguing that Palin is the ideal candidate for President. But I do believe that plenty of things that she has done have been blown out of proportion ("she doesn't read newspapers", really? Have you read HER OWN WORDS on the topic (Going Rogue, p 276-77), or do you just believe everything Katie Couric tells you?), AND that most, if not all, of Obama's stumbles, gaffes, and mistakes have gone un- or under-reported by today's media.
Sarah Palin and her ilk are living proof that ANYthing can happen... except for that little "electability" thing.
Obama and the teleprompter... that old chestnut again?? Really, red team, you need new material!
Teleprompters??? Really? Ever seen our current President? He uses teleprompters when speaking to a grade school classroom...not in an auditiorium...but in a classroom.
I don't think she's actually serious.Have you noticed she's never given a definitive answer on whether she was running or not, or how one minute she's not, then the next minute she "might"....she does this not because she's actually considering running (she knows she couldn't win) but because this is a sure fire way to get her name back in the spotlight and to make sure she's not forgotten. Not only that but this way she can also continue to string along her ever-diminishing group of followers and get them to financially contribute to her wallet.ahem. I mean, conservatives causes...*wink,wink.
