Yesterday, both Scott Paterno and Jay Paterno revealed separately that their father Joe Paterno has a "treatable" form of lung cancer, and Jay reminded us to "keep focus on the victims of this whole tragedy." No doubt the sons of the former Penn State coach, who was recently fired for his blatant neglect in handling the Jerry Sandusky child rape allegations that came to him years ago, are genuinely worried about their father's health and doing what they can to lighten the public burden that has piled up on their 84-year-old dad's shoulders.
"He has a tendency to minimize things," said Jay Paterno in an interview with ESPN about his father's reaction to his cancer diagnosis. Um, you think? That seems to be precisely what he has a tendency to do. Unfortunately, and without playing down his very real health issue, Paterno still must be made an example of for his irreparable choices in 2002.
Over the past several decades, I do think our society has opened up about child sex abuse -- and for the better. We are talking about it, naming it, and even naming the perpetrators. Even Oprah talked about her own childhood abuse to billions of viewers and shared her experiences with abuse by a family member. Jaycee Dugard, who spent 18 years in captivity with her abuser, told Diane Sawyer she wrote her memoir because, “It’s his shame, it’s not my shame." And that seems to, however slowly, be the way the world is finally beginning to see it. Less and less in these modern times do people think child molestation allegations can be simply swept under the rug and ignored.
Now if victims of the most horrifying abuses can speak out, it's about time that the adults in their communities come forward too, whenever they suspect something and for damn sure if someone witnesses something. It is our duty. Or should be. Yes, even when it's a well-known and loved individual who's suspected.
I'm sorry that Joe Paterno has lung cancer. I hope his treatment goes well. However, I also hope that when he recovers, he takes the time to publicly discuss his personal failings in this case. Only in that can others come forward or do better the next time. We need more men of respect to stand up for children of sexual abuse. To publicly decry this abomination against kids. To talk about the importance of speaking up. That way, maybe we can all learn something from Paterno's mistakes, especially other adults who have no idea how to talk about, let alone point the finger at and condemn the actions of these horrible predators.

FUCKING CHRIST.
LEARN YOUR FACTS.
HE DID HIS GOD DAMN JOB, LEAVE IT ALONE.
And no it doesn't change a damn thing. And for those who are saying he sold his wife the house for a 1$ because he knew this was gonna come out, is BS.
I personally think he sold it to her because he is 84 stinking years old, and he knew he was sick, and I hate to say this, but he knows that his time is coming.
ASSUME, since the press says, Paterno did the wrong thing. It's sad society is so ready to vilify him. We DON'T know he never reported Sandusky. We know (the press often fails to report) SOMEONE DID. We don't know who it was, but we know that NO ONE, including mothers of 2 victims (Alleged- nothing's PROVEN.) did anything after it was reported (for 13 years). Sandusky was reported 5 times in 10 years. NO ONE did anything.
Paterno will likely NOT be judged in a court. According to PA law, he did nothing illegal. The citizens of PA should take action & get legislators to enact the law some have been trying to pass for years, making it illegal for someone in Paterno's position to fail to report hearsay to police. It may even become legal in PA to use hearsay as evidence in court someday. According to law all he had was hearsay, also known as RUMOR.
Does anyone remember the Bakersfield, CA trials in the '80s: families were broke up & innocent parents went to prison for molestation charges? I can see this happening again to college coaches all over America. The snowball effect has started- now with a basketball coach in Syracuse NY. We should be careful what we say about unproven allegations. Comparing this to Jaycee Dugard is crazy. She had proof. What's true in this case? McQueary's word? It took 9 years to tell a story & he wasn't a victim I'm suspicious. He had nothing to lose, lots to gain, making Paterno look bad. He should have come forward if what he says is true.
Jdd, it's all about the media.
The media wants you to believe that Joe is in the wrong.
And since the media is saying he is wrong, everyone is thinking he is wrong.
And I want to know why this was taken care of years ago when he was turned in before. It's going to be awhile until all of this is taken care of. I do believe he is guilty, just by the way he talked in his interview. But until he is proven guilty, he is innocent which is sad.
If you know/suspect that a crime has been committed and you don't call the police, leaving the perpetrator of said crime free to continue to victimize others for years and years. Morally, YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG! I don't think the children that were raped are deciding who was wrong and who wasn't based on what the media says. And lets be honest, if one of those little boys were your son, I'm willing to bet my first born that none of what was written above would be here right now. By the way you don't have to depend on the media to find out what happened. Read the grand jury testimony.
He didn't do anything wrong.
Joe did what was right, and his job!
After that, it was his superiors and trustees that should've reported it. And they did not.
And, many people have read that grand jury, and it states that Joe is innocent, and people are still blaming him, because of hte media.
So if I see someone molesting your child and I tell my supervisor. One or two weeks later when I'm still seeing this person everyday and realize nothing has been done, I can wash my hands of the matter? Would you tell me thank you for telling my supervisor and not calling the police?
No, he didn't do anything wrong criminally. But morally, he was wrong. He's being blamed because he carried a tremendous amount of clout. With one word to the police he could have ended all of this. He could have helped but, instead, he and several others made it possible for Sandusky to live in a pedophiles paradise. As a parent and grandparent he should be ashamed that he helped pay a part in letting this thing go on for so long. Don't even get me started on Mike McQuery. No one is blaming these fools because of the media. We're blaming them because they really didn't care what happened to those kids.
Jesus Christ it blows my mind when I encounter people who don't get why everyone is upset with these people and their actions or lack there of. I get sick to my stomach just knowing that they all worked side by side with that man for years knowing that he was a monster and they where perfectly fine with that. I wouldn't want him within 100 feet of me.
