A strange thing happens when people stop getting paid for their services: They stop providing them. This is not necessarily wrong or evil or bad -- it’s just a fact of life. We all have things we need to spend money on: The mortgage or rent, groceries, clothes, lessons for our kids, gas for our cars, school loans that need to be paid back, etc.
We go to work and trade our services for the services of other people. A cobbler can make footwear all day long, but she can’t eat shoes for supper. So she sells her shoes in exchange for money, which she then gives to the grocer for some food. If the cobbler cannot make enough money to pay her bills, there’s no point in continuing to make shoes.
Hospitals have costs too. They have to pay their doctors, nurses, custodial staff, lab technicians, and all the other various employees (who in turn then have to pay their own bills); they have to pay for their fancy equipment; and they have to pay for the building they’re using and all of the upkeep costs associated with it.
So what happens when the government comes in and makes it illegal for people to charge what their services are worth? They’ll stop providing them. Not because they’re horrible people, but because they have to pay their bills too.
The government has decided to provide medical care for those that can’t afford it, at the taxpayer’s expense. To keep costs low, Uncle Sam has dictated how much money a medical care facility is allowed to charge the government for the services rendered. It is nearly always below the amount it costs the place.
It’s odd that politicians think that fewer people paying for more services will drive down the cost of health care. All it does is limit the available care. There’s a word for that -- rationing.
The most recent round of rationing is going to some of the 69 million Americans that participate in the Medicaid program. Their overnight hospital stays will be limited to a certain amount over the course of a year. Several states have already imposed such caps, and Arizona and Hawaii plan to join them. Stays in Arizona will be limited to 25 per year, and Hawaiians on Medicaid max out at 10 nights.
The hospitals just can’t afford to operate unless they get paid. Don’t think they’re heartless though ... patients will be allowed to stay if it’s deemed medically necessary. Peter Wertheim, a spokesman for the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association, said the hospitals will get stuck with the bill, but they won’t discharge or refuse to admit patients who medically need to be there.
There are a lot of things that could be done to ease the strain on our health care system, but mandating that highly skilled workers practice their trade for inadequate compensation is not one of them.

We have four hospitals in the town near us. Several of them have a second branch located on the other side of town. And 3 of them are ALWAYS expanding. Everytime we drive by them I wonder how long before they can no longer expand and those building start to go empty and we lose the specialty services offered in our area. :(
Well written, Jenny. I hope that people who champion the "free" Obamacare read it (this time) and understand it (this time) and finally get it through their thick/stubborn/or empty skulls that Obamacare will destroy medical care as we know it, and make it suck for everyone. This disincentives mandated by this law will absolutely lead to not only rationed care, but sub-standard care - medical care is not cheap, so when the government tries to make it so, it just goes away.
And I thought your other articles were bad and ignorant.
So, you're saying people like me and my daughter should just crawl in a hole and die already. That would make everything in this world so much better. No more need for Medicaid. Hospital can rake in their millions, IN PROFITS, and you don't have to hand over those few extra bucks on pay check to help out those of us who can't get insurance because of your other laws saying we cost too muc for them too. We make your insurance premiums go sky high, that's just not fair.
So, again, you're saying we are a worthless drain on society and should be removed?
Wow, I'd like you to come to my house, look into the eyes of my beautiful 2 year old little girl and tell her she is worthless and everyone else would have been better off if she wouldn't have lived or if the medical community would just let her die already.
You think those damn hospital could keep expanding if they were getting pain so little. USE YOUR BRAINS PEOPLE!
Jen_DBD use YOUR BRAINS and instead of internet why don't you buy health insurance. You are in fact a drain on society.
Jen DBD - no one thinks those without health insurance are a worthless drain on society - to get rid of. We have no health insurance for our soon to be 5 children, and my husband and I. We qualify for medicare and are considering it for true emergencies. We live frugally and save any tax return we get to take care of medical expenses. We pay out of pocket to see our doctor and we are paying out of pocket to pay for a midwife with this new baby coming.
There are people who truly NEED the medical care provided by medicaid. But when I see moms on cafemom recommending that you go to the ER and make something up just to get an ultrasound, or run to the ER because your child has a fever of 100 - it makes me sick to think of all the money being wasted caring for these individuals. When you have to pay for it yourself, you are careful to only use it for a real emergency.
And, unlike most Americans, I do not believe healthcare is a right. It is a service that we pay for, and we get what we can afford. Thankfully there are many charitable doctors, nurses, and physicians that donate time to facilities where you can be seen for very little.
Great article Jenny! Just wanted to add that many people I know personally (my dad, 2 brothers, cousin, and three friends off the top of my head) who are currently in the medical industry as nurses, paramedics, doctors, etc. are seriously questioning whether they can afford to stay in this line of work if Obamacare is implemented. Financially, they might not be able to.
Or what about high school students that thought about the medical industry and are now considering other options because of costs?
Whenever you are driving people away from highly specialized and NEEDED jobs such as medicine, something is seriously wrong.
also I find jen's comment very offensive....so as a medical professional I should be working for free? I only make 24 grand a year! My doctor makes maybe twice that and is in debt over 100,000 from student loans! How much should we cut from our pay? Do you have any idea of how much it takes to keep a practice open? I am quite offended that you think I should not have a house or car or decent life because you have a medical problem that requires treatment! Also (I am not catholic) but you can receive free services from catholic hospitals and other welfare agencies....but it is people like you, who are not thankful that I worked at a loss to see you, that ruin CHARITY for the people who do appreciate it. Typical left wing nut jobs....think only they are allowed to make any money and every one else is just greedy. Jeeze.....also people like you are ruining our gene pool. We keep people with these horrible medical conditions alive and let then breed.....to bad this is not sparta....and be glad I am not a dictator :)
