When it comes to Planned Parenthood, Republicans are like a dog with a bone: They just can't drop it.
It wasn't enough for GOP leaders to try to strip the family planning organization of its federal funding earlier this year (and almost shut down the government in the process). Nor were they content with their attempts to unfairly smear the organization as being "willing to use public funds to commit a federal crime." Now, congressional Republicans -- led by Florida Representative Cliff Stearns -- are demanding Planned Parenthood turn over more than a decade's worth of documents for an investigation into whether the organization improperly spends public money on abortions.
These bullies won't stop until they shut the whole organization down.
Here's why this so-called "investigation" is baloney:
Planned Parenthood is audited regularly and publicly. Moreover, as Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) wrote in a letter criticizing Stearns' investigation stated, "These audits have not identified any pattern of misuse of federal funds, illegal activity, or other abuse that would justify a broad and invasive congressional investigation." So why would the government waste time and money on a completely baseless investigation?
In fact, the only "abuse" here is the one being committed by Stearns and his panel: misusing their power and position to harass and intimidate an organization they are ideologically opposed to under the guise of "fiscal responsibility." It's obvious this is a politically motivated probe intended to discredit and damage Planned Parenthood -- just like Republicans have been doing relentlessly for the last several years.
It's infuriating to think our lawmakers would be wasting time and energy on this -- and not more pressing matters like the economy or jobs creation -- especially when there's already a law that bars the organization from using tax money for abortion. At a time when so many people are hurting financially, why attack an organization that actually provides family planning and health services to low-income women and men?
For its part, Planned Parenthood has planned to hand over the documents Stearns demanded in a timely manner -- which suggests the organization has nothing to hide.
Are you pissed off yet? Then sign the open letter telling the GOP to stop its attack on Planned Parenthood.

I find it interesting that providing money for family planning is "wasteful" but spending on a seemingly unecessary investigation of a routinely monitored healthcare provider is not.
Let them waste time and money. We can all laugh at them later when nothing turns up. Bunch of idiots.
I definately DO NOT agree with tax money being given to PP. It's invasive to the taxpayers who do not believe in abortion.
I cant effin stand these politicians I agree with this article to the fullest extent. pp (for me and everyone else I know) has helped me in the worst of times and if I had it, I would donate a billion dollars to them I cant wait until they find nothing on them and realize that this was a big waste of time. if they shut down planned parenthood i would be so pissed. I have been going there since I was 16. they are the only one (well, the only good one) that will except my insurance and it is not just a place where women go for abortions. I go there for EVERYTHING and they always help me FUCK STEARNS maybe he should jump off a cliff
Planned Parenthood is regularly audited by both the Department of Health and Human Services and state Medicaid officials and the results of those audits are available publicly (like this one, for example). If those audits had turned up anything unusual then further investigation would be warranted. It hasn't. This is a waste of time and money.
Also, taxpayer monies are used for much more abhorrent things than providing reproductive health services. Are you outraged about those things, as well?
Lastly, PP acquiesced immediately to their somewhat impatient demands. This upset is coming from Congressional Democrats who realize they have better things to do than redo work that's already been done.
Did anyone say PP is just abortions? Anyone? No? OK, then.
I think every government agency should be audited by a third party, and the audits should be made public. And, sorry, I especially think PP ought to have their books forensically audited on an annual basis because there are laws that prohibit them from using X dollars to pay for Y service. Given what we know about PP, t don't believe they care that much about laws, regulations, or they people they treat. I won't sign the petition. I would sign one in favor, though.
