Rupert Murdoch Runs the Emmys Just Like He Runs Fox News: Censorship!

alec baldwinFox proved that it literally has no sense of humor last night at the Emmys when they cut a joke Alec Baldwin had made about Rupert Murdoch and News Corp's phone hacking scandal

The 30 Rock actor had pre-recorded a bit for the opening video, where he pretended to be talking on a telephone, then he called out Rupert Murdoch's name, saying: "I can hear you listening!"

When Fox got wind of Baldwin's "joke," they immediately had it axed. Then, in retaliation, Alec asked to be edited out of the video completely. And then he decided to ditch the Emmys altogether (despite his nomination), opting to attend a celeb pal's birthday instead. And then he went off on Fox on Twitter.

I smell a 30 Rock episode ...

According to Baldwin, the reason he skipped the Emmys is because he had previously committed to Tony Bennett's birthday party in New York instead. Truth? Eh, I guess I'll buy it. Alec seems like a man of his word. But I certainly don't think his snub -- er, sorry, nonattendance -- was without any feelings of animosity. Here's what he wrote on his Twitter:

Fox did kill my NewsCorp hacking joke. Which sucks bc I think it would have made them look better. A little. I understand NewsCorp killing that joke. If I were enmeshed in a scandal where I hacked phones of families of innocent crime victims purely 4 profit, I'd want that 2 go away, 2

According to Fox, well, the reason the bit was cut was because the network apparently takes the phone hacking scandal very "seriously," and didn't want to appear to be joking about the matter.

I've gotta say, I agree with Baldwin here. (And, for the record, I'll typically usually agree with Alec Baldwin, or any Baldwin -- even Danny -- over Rupert Murdoch.) Airing a few jokes about the scandal -- especially coming from someone who is respected in the comedy world -- would have made News Corp look better. A little. Celebrities do that sort of thing all the time. In fact, I believe the antidote to celebrities being involved with some sort of scandal is a cameo on Saturday Night Live. Or at least a Funny or Die video.

The fact that everyone knows that Fox cut Baldwin's jabs just makes Murdoch and his cronies look like a bunch of petulant teenagers. Who are against free speech. And, really, can you think of a worse combination than that?

Do you think it was right of Fox to cut the jokes?
