On Monday, President Obama sent his much anticipated American Jobs Act to Congress and implored lawmakers to pass it immediately. Because, you know, it worked so well in 2009, when it was called the stimulus.
Seriously people, can we learn from our mistakes, please? The government does not know how to spend our money better than we do. In 2009, we were warned that the unemployment rate might rise over 8 percent if the stimulus bill wasn’t passed. Since the unemployment rate has held pretty much steady at or around 10 percent ever since, it’s hard to take the president seriously.
What makes this economic stimulus bill (whatever you call it, it’s still just a large amount of money borrowed at our children’s expense to pump an infusion of cash into the economy) different from the one before it? Many Democratic lawmakers said that the problem with the 2009 stimulus was that it didn’t go far enough. Why are they now lauding this one, which is just over half the size of the first? By their own logic, they should vote against this bill, because it will have no chance of working unless it’s at least eleventy billion dollars.
What’s that? President Obama says this $447 billion bill won't add to the deficit? Excuse my skepticism, but how is adding to our debt not going to add to the deficit? Oh, that’s right. We’ll just tax the greedy rich people that lollygag around on their corporate jets.
Of course, as David Burge points out, excessively taxing the wealthy will barely put a dent in the debt we already have, so it’s silly to think that it would cover this extra half-a-trillion-dollar or so bill.
Aside from the issue of paying for this monstrosity of a spending bill, how will spending money on government jobs and infrastructure turn the economy around? If everyone is on the government’s dime, who will fund the paychecks? The government itself does not have any money – it only has what it takes from us, the taxpayers.
The only way to get Americans back to work is to create a stable economic environment. Raising taxes on the wealthy job creators isn’t the way to do that.

The "job creators" have had their tax breaks for 10 years. Where are the jobs? Not only have they failed to create jobs, there's even less jobs now. The time to start taxing the Uber wealthy and creating jobs for the unemployed is now.
I feel like the government is just throwing single giant fixes at the problem, instead of working with what they've got. This is how the economy is right now. DEAL WITH IT. Don't just pour cash into it and expect it to be fixed.
I'd like to say "ditto" to what onethentwins said up there.
So what is YOUR genius suggestion then? I see no other suggestions floating around, just people bitching that this isn't the answer.
Obama is attempting to cover his ass...that is all...once again, it's a smoke and mirrors trick to make the VOTERS believe he's actually trying to do something....he knows he will fail....there must be major reform when it comes to welfare and illegal immigration. Bring home our troops....we can still pay the salaries of active enlisted men and women without all the expenses from being in all the countries we are in around the world. We have big enough problems here in the states without propping up the whole flipping world! I just read an article about how much money we send to china to help their infrastructure...it's in the millions. Now...tell me again....where are we getting that money? YEP, that's right....from CHINA! We are borrowing money to give them money....Doesn't that sound absolutely crazy to anyone else?
You want to spout about big corporations...yeah, yeah, yeah....well, those UBER rich you are talking about are people who at the end of the day don't actually bring home those $200K salaries that you think should be taxed. Yes, $200k sounds like a lot to me. We're a family of 6 getting by (barely) on less than $40K a year and we barely cover all our debts...there's none left over. We pay dearly for our health insurance. Just dropped dental and 401K. My hubby hasn't had a raise in 3 yrs and it's coming time for evals at work and I seriously doubt they will be handing out raises to anyone for the 4th year...they just laid off 30 people there until at least the end of the month. But....with a degree in economics....there is NO FLIPPIN' WAY you could ever convince me on the pathetic jobs bill the ole' prez is trying to sell us.
Those small businesses who might pull in $200K are probably mostly in the red a good portion of the year. Their overhead and other expenses including taxes and wages to employees do not allow for large salaries for themselves (as owners) nor expensive benefits. I would think that people would be overjoyed to even get a job, with or without healthcare. But seems like most people are too good to take a job at a fast food place or maybe a daycare....Our parents and grandparents before us had to face these things too. Without benefits, without childcare...they took in sewing, sold eggs and other goods, did childcare in their home, cleaned houses....but unfortunately we are in a society that believes those jobs are "beneath" them.....keep begging for those handouts...I'm sure BO will put you on the gravy train.
