Parents Praying for 19th Child Are a Danger to Their Kids

bates family abcSome say three kids is the new two, but two kids will be my own personal max. I figure birth control is going to play a bigger part in that fate over God. And these are maybe just a couple of reasons why I think Tennessee's Kelly and Gil Bates are out of control. Parents to 18 children, the Bates are hoping to soon catch up to their friends, reality TV show stars the Duggars. No scratch that, they're not just hoping. They're currently praying for more.

I'd actually love to just chalk them up as Bible-thumping nut job hypocrites (for being okay with medical intervention to procreate but against birth control) and call it a day -- IF ONLY they had health insurance for 10 of their children! But they do not. And therefore, they're not just crazy. They're dangerous.

Reportedly, they've had pretty good luck with a Christian clinic when it comes to prenatal care, and they just waltz into the ER when they have a medical emergency. That's nice, but most families would probably want to make sure they could afford and take care of their existing children before having more. But no. That's not how the Bates family sees it. They're hell-bent on having more kids, regardless of health issues (Kelly has already had three miscarriages and is 44 years old) or medical bills.

Not only are the majority of their children sans health insurance, but most of them are living on top of one another (quite literally -- eight of the girls from 20 years old to 2 share a bedroom and sleep in bunk beds). These kids seem to have absolutely no privacy, no lives of their own.

And these nightmarish circumstances seem to be just the tip of the iceberg for this freaky family. Of course, no one can tell them how to live their lives (until they actually break the law), but as far as I'm concerned, the Bates having more children when they can't properly care for the ones they have seems so irresponsible, it borders on abusive.

What do you think about this family's goal to have more kids?

From the article you linked: "...'negotiations' with insurance companies has helped in medical emergencies - such as birth complications with Addallee - in the past, said Gil."

You know what that means? It means WE pay for the difference. Part of the reason our private insurance company premiums are so high is because we are paying for medical care of people who can't. Side note about this- so many people are complaining about universal health care taking away your money to pay for poor people's health care... we already do pay for it in our premiums!!! If only people would stop having so many babies they can't pay for...

It's absolutely NONE of your business. And calling this family "freaky" just because you don't agree with their lifestyle is reprehensible.

Very hypocritical of them to not allow bc but allow drugs for fertility.

I agree that they should be more responsible with their insurance and living arrangement, but o well I don't think they are breaking any laws.

I think they are doing it for the publicity, so good job helping them out with that, even though you say you don't agree with them.

I agree. leave them alone. It's their life.

Uh, hate to break it to you all who think this family's crazy choices are not our business but WHEN THEY DECIDED TO GO PUBLIC (talking to reporters or newspapers or whatever these nutty peeps did to get attention) it became our business. If they didn't want to hear what others had to say about their choices, they should've led a private life. It seems like they are using kids to outdo the duggars. The earth is overpopulated enough and now these wackadoodles are pumping out babies. Some people shouldn't breed.

Wow.  Just can't get past  your sentence about not having insurance for your children being dangerous.  Nice.  Insurance isn't necessary.  You can pay out of pocket or make payments to pay off a bill.  It's not dangerous.

Their kids seem very happy, and they all do so much for their community and even those abroad on mission trips. Just because you disagree with their religion, and the fact that they think children are a blessing from God doesn't mean they're doing anything wrong. The whole tone of your article just shows how intolerant you are or someone elses beliefs. How many people in America can afford health insurance with just two children? one even?  They don't rely on the government so I don't think their finances are any of anyones business. Tolerence seems to only be for sinful lifestyles these days.
