While Democratic U.S. Representative Maxine Waters has been busy telling Tea Partiers to go “straight to hell,” Social Security has been headed that way for years. According to the Associated Press:
New congressional estimates say the trust fund that supports Social Security disability will run out of money by 2017, leaving the program unable to pay full benefits, unless Congress acts. About two decades later, Social Security's much larger retirement fund is projected to run dry, too, leaving it unable to pay full benefits as well.
Liberals can say conservatives want to throw Grandma off a cliff all they want, but the fact is that without reform, entitlement programs like Social Security will eventually collapse our entire financial system.
Here are the two main reasons Social Security is absolutely doomed to fail at some point in the (not too distant) future: 1) People are living longer, and 2) payouts each year are increased at a rate above the inflation rate. Simply put: You cannot give more money to more people without it coming from somewhere.
People are living longer, and the retirement age remains 65. This means that there are more people every year collecting benefits. Since the Baby Boomers did not have as many children as they had siblings, the ratio of workers paying into the system to retirees receiving payments is going to shift dramatically, placing a huge financial burden on the workforce.
In 1950, there were 16 workers for every retiree on Social Security. Today there are less than 3. As mentioned above, when the Boomers start retiring (this year, by the way), more people are going to be relying on fewer workers to support them.
In addition to the ever-increasing amount of beneficiaries, the payouts for Social Security are ever increasing as well. The benefit formula uses average national wages, rather than inflation, to calculate payments to retirees. On average, wages grow faster than inflation. It’s why people have more stuff today -- because the cost of living has actually gone down over the years.
Can you imagine telling a 1950s American that by 2011 the average household would own two or more cars? Or that 9 out 10 of us would own cellphones? How would you even explain a cellphone?
If Social Security benefits continue to be based on wages rather than inflation, workers’ taxes are going to go up, which means less money for them, which means no new iPhone this year. If we kept the levels even with inflation, retirees would still get the annual increases they needed to live, and workers could keep more of their own earnings to save or squander as they saw fit.
Something’s got to give. Changes need to be grandfathered in. There’s a limited amount of money, and there’s no way we’ll be able to keep going as we’re going now. Reform does not mean an immediate end to Social Security, but no reform guarantees its collapse.

I don't see what the big deal is. Just raise the debt ceiling again. Go into more debt and pay the social security. (sarcasm)
As for beating inflation you are quite wrong. My social security benefits have not increased even though the cost of basics such as food have increased.
A final point: your gripe about keeping up with the joneses applies more to younger generations. Yes, I'm waiting for iPhone 5, but, then, I've had my current phone for 3 years - have you?
All fear-mongering aside, please note that 'not being able to pay full benefits' is not the same thing as 'running dry.' Also note, that these doomsday scenarios of Ms. Erikson's are only if Congress does nothing...that is, if nothing changes. No means testing, no raising the salary cap above $102,000 a year, etc., etc.
Social Security will still pay 80-90% of benefits in 2017 (if nothing changes) and approx 65-75% of benefits in 30 years (if nothing changes).
Hardly the end of the world as we know it.
Rick Perry and his ilk want to do away with Social Security and Medicare all together rather than make the small, relatively painless changes that are necessary to save the whole thing. They want to take the money and put it in the roller-coaster of the stock market (yes, it rises over time but not everyone invests wisely). They want to issue some kind of vouchers to seniors -- which will require an ever-growing government to administer. Their 'solutions' are worse than the problem.
The average lifespan in the USA has increased by about 30 years since SS began, yet the age to collect SS retirement benefits has increased by only 3 years. The age to receive SS retirement benefits needs to increase by one year every-other-year for the next 50 years... starting NOW, not some far off date like 2050 so that nobody remembers the politicians' names that voted to raise the retirement age (which is the REAL reason they haven't had the 'nads to fix the Socialist Security Ponzi scheme so far). Tell ya wut.
they are saying people get a raise higher then inflation that is bs my mom has not had a raise in years. they may wanna look at their records again. Oh and btw it is not that easy to get disability. i had to take my mom three times and she had to go through a bunch of tests each time the last one finally seen what she had been telling them and her doctors also told them. you should try raising two special needs kids with what hubby makes and having one of them needing therapy and the insurance will only pay so much so please do not tell me it comes easy because it does not, oh and btw if the government catches them doing drugs other then taking what dr prescribes they will lose their benefits. Because i know some that it happened to.
I'm a Boomer and I will GLADLY GIVE UP MY SOCIAL SECURITY (and no, I am not rich). I consider it BUYING MY CHILD OUT OF SLAVERY. Jenny is being kind, gentle...I'm not- IT;S OUR FAULT! WE *GAVE* THEM OUR MONEY. WE *KNEW* IT WAS A PONZI SCHEME AND WE DID *NOTHING*
I've been voting since 1980 and EVERY SINGLE ELECTION CYCLE OF MY LIFE THERE HAVE BEEN PROMISES AB9UT SOCIAL SECURITY REFORM...well, here we are, BROKE. OUR KIDS ARE IN $48,000 OF TAX DEBT, BEFORE THEY EVER WORK A DAY!
Enough of BS excuses. WE DID IT TO OURSELVES. It may not be "fair", you might "DESERVE" to collect...it's not about that. HERE'S THE COLD HARD TRUTH: ONE HIUNDRED *TRILLION* IN RETIREMENT DEBT, SECURED WITH *NOTHING* BUT OUR KIDS' LABOR!!!

(Damn right I'm YELLING!)
I actually agree with everyting THIS woman has to say on the subject, including how most people WON'T free America, but demand to "get theirs" instead. Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxxnhvufO_I Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbkdX042NxQ&feature=related
THAT'S the insideous thing about Socialism/Communism, they get GOOD PEOPLE dependent on their system so that GOOD PEOPLE will fight to BE SOCIALISTS. DO NOT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT!
Ummm, you know there is a country that requires you to pay little to no taxes, has virtually no laws (therefore is a super freedom loving place, right?), and lets all the rich keep their money while every one else has to "work" their way to the top with little to no resources to begin with. Oh and they don't have evil entitlement programs either. It is called Somalia. Libertarian paradise. Don't worry though, when you move there you can use all your money to build really high walls around your compound so you don't have to look at those lazy starving people outside your gates. Sounds like a great place huh?
