In case you missed it, Texas Governor Rick Perry announced this past Saturday that he will indeed run for President of the United States. In this “unlucky” economy, one of the core issues of the upcoming campaign will no doubt be jobs and the economy.
Perry has wasted no time -- he’s already touring the country touting his effectiveness as the governor of one of the only states in the nation that is actually creating jobs.
"We are home to fewer than one in 10 Americans ... but four in 10 new American jobs are in our state," he told a conference of state legislators from around the nation this week.
In response to Governor Perry’s boasting, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair and Congressional Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz had this to say on CBS’s Face the Nation:
It's extremely difficult for him to deserve credit for that job creation when you have rising gas prices that created oil jobs that he had nothing to do with, when you had military spending as a result of two wars that created military jobs that he had nothing to do with, when you have the Recovery Act championed by President Obama that created jobs in Texas that he had nothing to do with.
Let’s tackle this issue by issue, shall we?
First thing: Rising gas prices means more oil jobs. Apparently Ms. Wasserman-Schultz missed out on Econ 101, because she obviously doesn’t understand supply and demand. The more supply, the less the demand, and therefore the cheaper the price of the end product. So if more oil jobs were created, it would mean more oil on the market, which would mean lower prices for you and me. How much does gas cost again these days? Oh yeah, it’s expensive.
Second thing: If military spending were creating jobs in Texas, it would be creating jobs everywhere. Texas doesn’t have its own military, and governors don’t declare war.
Third thing: The Recovery Act was an abysmal failure. Liberals should be embarrassed at spending over a million dollars of our money for each job created. Besides, if the stimulus had worked, why would Texas be benefiting from it more than other states?
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is putting up straw man arguments. That means that while her words sound scary (like a scarecrow!), they are meaningless and easily brushed aside once you know the truth of things.
Rick Perry is doing something right in Texas. It would be nice to see that across the nation.

I find the "yes, but....." points sort of interesting, in light of the fact that Obama hasn't done ANYTHING - I'll take a stack of "yes, but..." examples. I won't even get into the fact that the "yes, buts" are driven by what I suspect is sky-high rate of teen pregnancy in Texas. I lived there a decade ago and worked in a communtiy based ob-gyn office. It was the norm for girls to gett pregnant in high school, drop out, shack up with the baby daddy who also dropped out, and get a fast food job or live off government assistance. There's no much a governor can do to curb generations of babies having babies - you can't govern smart choices.
I've yet to decide if I like Perry. I think he's effective and capable, and Obama isn't, so I welcome his hat in the ring.

And I absolutely have to add that this woman is probably the most empty-headed person in politics, definitely today, and maybe ever. I've yet to hear a factual statement come out of her mouth. In fact, I've yet to hear an intelligent one come out of her mouth. I can't believe she chairs the DNC.
Oh this is hysterical! I love how this is the second article she's written that so conveniently omits the information in the first reader's comment.
And hoticed, you can't govern smart choices, but you CAN govern smart educational policies. You probably wouldn't have a plethora of teen pregnancies if there was any real sex education in Texas.
My husband went to school in Texas - they do have sex ed. Teen pregnancy is just so common and accepted that it's their "normal" - many of these kids start their families by choice while in highschool. It's not a lack of education in the schools, it's a lack of education by the parents.
@Eva-good comment!
And yeah, the teen pregnancy/STD rates skyrocketed in Texas b/c of abstinence only education, which hasn't been around for that long, but has already shown devestating effects. I dot care how good your economic plans are, if your social policies are everything I (& my family & friends) are against, I can't in good conscience vote for you.
