Jaime Zapata was an ICE agent who was murdered in Mexico. Mario Gonzalez Rodriguez was the brother of a Mexican state official when he was kidnapped, tortured, and killed. Brian Terry was a border patrol agent who was murdered south of Tucson.
There are many more like them, murdered by Mexican drug cartels, shot with weapons purchased in the United States under the advisement of the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, and Tobacco (ATF).
In 2009, the ATF instructed arms dealers in Arizona to participate in Project Gun Runner by selling firearms to shady customers with ties to Mexican drug cartels, and 2,500 weapons were sold with the hope that they would end up in the hands of drug lords. Then agents could implement part two of the plan, Operation Fast and Furious, to find them and make arrests.
As of now, 1,200 of those assault weapons are MIA. As in, they are in the possession of very bad people who are using them to do very bad things. And we have no idea where they are, and no way of finding them until they show up at a crime scene.
People are dead thanks to this harebrained scheme. Americans and innocent Mexican citizens are dying in the crossfire. President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have publicly denied any knowledge of the fiasco.
Except that Eric Holder was bragging about it in 2009. From a speech he gave in Mexico on April 2, 2009:
Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner ...
So obviously he did know about it.
President Obama may not have known about the sting operation, but he’s the one that approved and funded it (to the tune of $10 million) via the stimulus package. $10 million of your hard-earned money was used to outfit violent, evil people that will shoot you dead in a heartbeat and get annoyed when your blood spatters on their boots.
So Obama either approved the operation, or he’s signing into law abominable pieces of legislation that get people killed. Either way, it’s totally not cool.
Something is not right. We need to get to the bottom of this, and those that participated in handing over a thousand untraceable weapons to murderous men need to be held accountable. The victims deserve that much.
