It seriously doesn't look like Amanda Knox is ever going to catch a break. During her appeal hearing today, Rudy Guede, the Ivory Coast drifter who was convicted (along with Knox and Raffaele Sollecito) of Meredith Kercher's murder, claimed that Knox was in fact there the night of Kercher's death. He also confirmed a letter he wrote to his lawyers last year, blaming Kercher's death on Knox and Sollecito.
So, let's take a look at what we have here: A former drifter/current convicted murderer who's doing time is implicating someone else in the crime. Hmph ... I don't know about you, but that seems a "case closed" to me. The star witness has spoken.
Amanda, who was not allowed to speak while Guede was in the courtroom, said that she was both "shocked and anguished by these declarations" because Guede "knows [they] weren't there." I'm surprised anything shocks Amanda these days -- especially someone like Rudy Guede demonstrating less than exemplary scruples.
Now, I'm not a lawyer, but let's not forget, Rudy Guede's DNA was all over the place -- including inside Kercher -- the night of her murder. And Knox's was nowhere to be found. Shouldn't that be enough evidence? It's a mystery to me why this is even still going on.
Like many others, my heart goes out to Amanda. This appeal seemed to have a decent shot at first, but now -- I hate to say -- it looks like it's going down the tubes. Why is the court spending money to bring Guede back around? They should be focusing on the DNA and the numerous misunderstandings that seemed to have taken place throughout this process. The strangest things (read, most ridiculous) seem to be taking precedence over hard evidence and factual science. It's like they're doing everything they can to keep Amanda locked up.
The other thing that's sad about this whole farce of a case is the disrespect it's bringing (has brought) to Meredith Kercher. Using Amanda Knox as an example (or whatever the Italian court is trying to do) is not going to bring her back. But bringing hard justice to the person who killed her may at least offer a little peace to her family. And right now that's really all they can ask for.
Do you think Amanda Knox is guilty?
