Poor Jon Huntsman. The newest guy to throw his name into the hat for the GOP nod for the race for the presidency has never had quite the name recognition of a Newt Gingrich or a Michele Bachmann to begin with. But at least the former Utah governor was confident he was the guy who could lead the Republicans to victory in 2012.
That is until the Huntsman campaign gave all media passes to the "John Huntsman for President" campaign announcement. Take note of that extra "H" in there. Guy doesn't even have name recognition in his own offices, and he thinks he can win the presidency? Boy does he have some work cut out for him! But he's had a rough day, what with his campaign announcement, and those misspelled press passes, so let's give America a head start on getting to know Jon Huntsman via his resume:
1. Most recent boss: President Barack Obama. Confused? Yup, this guy's a Republican, but until April, Huntsman was working for the United States government as the U.S. ambassador to China. He stepped down from the post to run for the presidency, and he made sure to distance himself from Obama's policies in today's official announcement, calling the state of the economy "totally unacceptable" and "totally un-American."
2. Religion: Mormon. Like current GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, the former Utah governor attends the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
3. Hero: President Ronald Reagan. The first president to bring the Utah native (although he was born in California, he was raised in Utah) to Washington, Reagan hired Huntsman as a White House staff assistant. He would go on to serve under Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and then President Barack Obama in different capacities. Today's announcement, made at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, with the Statue of Liberty behind him, was meant to evoke the memory of Reagan's own campaign announcement in 1980 in the same spot.
Were you familiar with Jon Huntsman before today's announcement? Is he on your shortlist for the Republican primary?
