Big news, fellow citizens! Badoo.com, a British social network and dating site, asked 30,000 people across 15 countries to rank nationalities from funniest to least funniest, and guess what. We Americans were named the funniest bastards on the planet. We're number 1! We're number 1! Mission accomplished! Suck it, Canada!
The second and third place prizes went to Spain and Italy respectively -- who knew? I wouldn't have predicted that. I would have, however, been right if asked to guess which nationality was ranked least funniest. It was, of course, ze Germans. They beat out Russians and Turks for the last place spot.
But wait a second. Is everyone laughing with us ... or at us? Shark farts.
Reuters posits that it's because of our sitcoms like Friends, Seinfeld, 30 Rock, and The Simpsons. We've also got some hilarious comedians to call our own, too, like Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert. (Sidebar: As much as it pains me to say it, a lot of our most famous funny people are gasp! Canadian. Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Will Arnett, Ryan Reynolds, Norm MacDonald ... I'll stop.)
But while some seriously funny Americans put out some seriously funny stuff, I'm wondering if our nation's politics, obsession with fast-food, and fascination with reality shows doesn't make us a little bit laughable. How hard did people crack up when President Clinton "did not have sexual relations with that woman" ... then did? And aren't we all still slapping our knees over Palin's "I can see Alaska from my house" comment?
The Triple Baconator Cheeseburger at Wendy's is side splittingly funny, both literally and figuratively. And the KFC Double Down sandwich is also gut-bustingly comical. The kids on the Jersey Shore are hilarious ... and so are the shows Cheaters, and heck, Judge Judy. No one likes to be the butt of a joke, so is our #1 spot something we should be proud of?
"You betcha!" We're on top, and that's all that matters. Laugh with us and laugh at us -- the more merriment we can bring to the world, the better! USA! USA!
Do you think the world is laughing with us or at us?
