If we could go a week without a pundit on either side of the political aisle putting their foot in their mouth, it would be nice. But thanks to MSNBC's Ed Schultz, it doesn't look like this will be the week. The liberal TV and radio host showed the quickest way to LOSE an argument when he took a shot at Fox News fave Laura Ingraham.
Schultz called Ingraham a "right wing slut" on Tuesday. And he used the s-word not once but TWICE. Ye-owch Ed. The first time I was really hoping you meant "right wingnut." Really ... hoping.
But take a listen:
It's pretty clear that he said slut, and he meant slut. Sadly, Ed Schultz was in the middle of talking about an important issue here -- the right winger's rabid focus on President Obama's trip to a Guinness factory rather than the devastating tornado in Missouri -- and he derailed. Because he couldn't control the vitriol, he turned a conversation about a matter of national importance to a playground argument.
Calling someone a slut is, among other things, sexist and rude. It's a way to tear a woman down for simply having a uterus. It's not to be called for. And it's certainly not a way to address your distaste for someone's politics.
But it doesn't matter what he called her, really, does it? It's not which nasty name he used so much as the use of an epithet at all that is the problem here. The better argument would simply have been to say, "Laura Ingraham said this, and she's wrong because of this."
See how easy that it is? It's what we learned to do back in grade school, when our math teachers taught us about proofs. All it takes to prove a point is the truth.
When are pundits -- right and left -- going to realize that the best way to win an argument is when we can get back to the old-fashioned Dragnet "just the facts" style of taking someone down?

Ugh, it reminds me of how these people act so much like children. This is pretty much the 'adult way' of going, "Mom! He's touching me!" "Mom! Laura's a poopyhead!" I think these people, plus all of our politicians, should publically wear onesies, diapers, bibs, and pacifiers until they grow up!
Gotta love the biased idocracy of this whole article. Seriously?? Your whole article just screamed "playground behavior." Why don't you do an article on the fact FOX "NEWS" has continously down-right LIED time and time again, and they are no longer a crediable news source. In fact, FOX NEWS is the laughing stock of the country.
Why don't you do a story on the 16 year old high school student who challenged potential REPUBLICAN canadite Michelle Bauchman to an American History / Geography competition? Annnd you could add how many threatening letters and phone calls she has received because of it. Her father is fearful for her life.
Or maybe you could do a story on all the times some high and mighty Republican has resorted to name calling on National TV?
Just a thought.
Bad form Mr. Schultz. He could have said what he had to say minus that word.
@BreefullyM384 How was the article biased? It was about someone who said something he shouldn't have said, because he should know better.
Different writers have done stories on FOX.
There has been a story about Amy Myers and a follow up story on the threats she says she has been a victim of.
OMG IS THAT YOU MS SAGER????
Finally an article by you slamming the left for their name calling. I applaud you. I thank you. I have a little more respect for you!! Just for you doing this, I get paid in two weeks, and I am doing the Relay for Life and doing the survivors walk, and I will donate 100 dollars in your name as a truce. I will make sure that it goes for childhood cancer patients, a cause that you are very passionate about!! WAY TO GO!! Now I hope my fellow republicans will call out republicans when they do wrong.
@Bree, did you see the article she wrote about the girl who challenged Bauchman?? Ms Sager is hardly a republican. FARRRRRRRRR from it.
Bree, you must be new here. Jeanne wrote about the HS girl the other day. And she regularly writes about how Fox News is, allegedly, a poor news source. (I could say the same about nearly every news outlet there is... *cough* CNN/Fareed Zakaria *cough*) She regularly calls out R's for any and all bad behavior she spots. We regularly debate her about it, too.
But this time, she's correct. People on BOTH sides of the aisle are very quick to jump all over the other side, call names, and act all high and mighty while coming up with excuses why their side is justified in calling names but the other side is not.
Just because R's call names does not mean that D's should call names. And likewise, because D's call names, doesn't make it ok for R's to do it. Frankly, they ALL need to sit down, shut up, and do their jobs. The country is damn near broke, and they're all in their Ivory Towers, fiddling away.
@MommyD I wish people would focus less on what side of the aisle these people may sit on or side with and just focus on holding them accountable when they say something wrong. Holding them all accountable if they are on your "side" or not and, not making excuses for them just because they are on your "side" will force them to start to behaving like civilized adults.
@BreefullyMe87, Funny you should mention it, Jeanne has written two articles on the teen that challenged Michele Bachmann and is receiving threats:

http://thestir.cafemom.com/in_the_news/120758/tea_party_gives_teen_a
She's also written frequently on FOX News & Republicans who name call - but there are too many links to mention. I think it's great that she can call out bad behavior no matter who it's coming from and doesn't give anyone a pass because they might share the same political views as she does.
