Well, it's May 21, 2011, and for some reason, we're all still here! It's not Doomsday -- in fact, it's actually a pretty nice day here in the greater NYC area. No one, as far as we know, has experienced the Rapture. I gotta say -- part of me is a little disappointed. Not that I was looking forward to the end of the world, but it's always nice when something happens to shake up the day in, day out doldrums, ya know?
In fact, I give 88-year-old evangelical radio station owner and operator, Harold Camping a lot of credit for getting all of our attention these past few weeks. He sure knows how to do his job! With some cockamamie math and a small but vocal following, he was able to stir up publicity for himself and Family Radio. And as obvious a FAIL as his prediction was, Camping deserves a big ol' pat on the back for giving us something invaluable ... an escape from reality!
Sure, it's important that we know the real news of the day -- especially since only a slight majority of the American public follows national news regularly and two-thirds tend to ignore international news. But geeze, it can just get sooo frustrating and even dull, man! Do we really need to read more stories about stalemates in Washington? More stories about war, the economic falling apart, the debt ceiling, radicals trying to marginalize women, terrorism?
Pfffft! No! We DESERVE a reprieve from all that toxic noise once in a while! And the last time Harold Camping interrupted our regular programming to bring us a doomsday prediction was back on September 6, 1994 (my 11th b-day!). So it's been a long time comin' since we've had such a wacky-fun distraction!
Here's the thing ... Harold Camping is -- like President Obama described certain megalomaniacs who distract us from the real news -- a carnival barker preachin' about a circus side show! But sometimes, I appreciate reading the front page of a newspaper only to see that instead of worrying about actual death and destruction, we get to laugh at a clown.
What do you think -- was Harold Camping's May 21 doomsday prediction a welcome break from reality or a waste of time?

Jenny - I didn't realize that it is supposed to start at 6. He's got the time nailed down - amazing! God must have spoken right to him. :P
I'm VERY interested to hear what he says tomorrow! lol
He's still taking donations on his website. Doesn't he know it takes the bank 3 days to clear a Credit Card payment and deposit into your account? Surely God would have mentioned that to him too? LOL
He actually said it was supposed to start at 6 pm in all the time zones. Starting with a great earthquake in NZ.
She they way I heard it, its whereever you live at 6pm thats when it will happen.... which makes no sence at all.... does this man not understand how earthquakes work?
I find myself being more annoyed at each new Stir post.
