According to materials gathered at the compound where Osama bin Laden was shot and killed last Sunday, bin Laden was planning another big terrorist attack in the US this fall to "celebrate" the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. So, for anyone wondering if we should have taken him out, this should provide all the needed proof. We got him just in time.
Now conspiracy theorists will likely wonder whether it is too convenient that we found these plans, but it is no big surprise that the Al Qaeda leader would still have been plotting against the US. This time, however, he was not targeting planes.
The assault team took five cell phones, five computers, 10 hard drives and more than 100 storage devices from the compound, along with other objects, such as guns, papers and clothing. And in that pile was information revealing a potential plot against US rail lines.
Al Qaeda operatives were discussing tipping a train by tampering with the rails so that the train would fall off the track at the point of either a valley or on a bridge. They were also looking to target big mass-transit hubs.
The FBI and Homeland Security have said they are encouraging local governments to maintain vigilance. But there are no plans to issue a terrorism alert, because there is still no specific or credible intelligence of any actual attack plan in the works. For them, this is not a shock as mass transit is an obvious target because of its vulnerability. There is very little security because it would be nearly impossible to guard every inch of rail line in his country.
Authorities are now reexamining a 2007 incident in Chicago where several railroad spikes were removed from the tracks. There was $50,000 reward, but the FBI has not found any suspects.
The threat also does not end with bin Laden's death. Al Qaeda released a statement confirming the death of their leader but not giving up the fight. They said:
We stress that the blood of the holy warrior sheik, Osama bin Laden, God bless him, is precious to us and to all Muslims and will not go in vain. We will remain, God willing, a curse chasing the Americans and their agents, following them outside and inside their countries. . . Soon, God willing, their happiness will turn to sadness. Their blood will be mingled with their tears.
Unfortunately, the time to rest easy was short-lived and may have already passed.
Does this scare you?
