Oh, Rush Limbaugh, you never fail to infuriate. The latest out of Camp Crazy Right-Wing Radio: He took a caller last week named Laura who wanted to complain about how everyone seems to LOVE Michelle Obama's fashion sense, but she (she who is ... who? The Anna Wintour of Washington state?) doesn't get it. She raved out to Limbaugh:
I am so sick and tired of hearing about our First Lady and her fashions. Every time I see her and they start talking about how fashionable she is and the colors she wears, I think about that old story, The Emperor's New Clothes. Every time [Michelle] dresses in yellow, I keep expecting some little kid to pop up and say, "She looks like a bowl of mustard." ... She never seems to look classy. She never seems to wear her clothes with any finesse or flair. She just seems to march around like a lumberjack.
Wow. What a reason to call up a radio personality. Because you've realized that Michelle Obama shouldn't wear yellow -- stop the presses!
Of course, though, Rush had to take this mundane topic as an opportunity to steer the conversation into repugnant territory ...
First, he tried to get Laura to explain why she thinks those who rave about the First Lady's style do so. She didn't get it at first, but after a bit more prodding, she finally rasped:
I know this is going to sound racist, but if they do it in any other way, then they're going to be marked as racist probably.
Rush agreed, clearly happy that she was willing to head down this path with him. He concurred:
If they are critical of her fashion choices, I'm sure that there might be some fear there that the criticism stems from ... because if you criticize any of Obama's policies, you're racist.
Alright, let's get something straight. Criticizing President Obama's policies with tact and diplomacy and offering a reasonable alternative does not mean you're racist. But criticizing policies while holding bigoted signs, requesting to see a birth certificate, and shouting "Ni**er!" at Black politicians makes you a racist. And yeah, obsessively, hatefully dwelling on the First Lady's looks and railing out about her fashion choices probably means you're at the very least SEXIST, if not racist and sexist.
Sure, Hillary Clinton got teased a LOT about her fashion sense -- when she was First Lady and when she ran for President. And every First Lady before her has had to deal with constant jabbering about her clothes and style. Most of that criticism was steeped in sexism. How often do we make such a big deal about male politicians' or our Presidents' "fashion sense"? Uh, never.
Of course, this story wouldn't be complete if there wasn't some mention of chunker Rush ripping on Michelle's figure. He just can't seem to drop talking about her figure. Except, now he's talking about how he can't talk about it ...
I shouldn't have to say it. Do you want me to talk about Michelle's shape? I'm not going to say what I think about her shape. I'm not sure what it is. I can't win this. There's no purpose here into getting into such detailed discussion and analysis of the First Lady's shape.
No kidding. But then why did he even bring it up?! Why did he even take this phone call? Just to stir the pot, I'm sure. But he didn't manage to break new, shocking sexist ground or add fuel to an already brightly-burning fire of hatred for the First family from the right. He and this lame caller just sound like pathetic, angry nitwits who have nothing better to do than conduct their own one-on-one radio version of Project Runway. Anyone else see a future SNL skit in this?
Do you think Michelle Obama's fashion sense is a newsworthy topic for Rush Limbaugh to cover on his show? What do you think about his and the caller's comments?
